‘We’re about halfway there’: Houston mayor again warns Houstonians to stay off roads during winter storm

Houston Mayor John Whitmire held another news conference Tuesday evening to provide the latest information on the winter storm and snow that Houston has faced over the last day.

“The main purpose of our press conference this afternoon is to emphasize that we’re about halfway there,” Whitmire said. “We have had very good results in the last 24 hours.”

Like yesterday, Mayor Whitmire emphasized the importance of staying at home and staying off the roads again Wednesday to prevent car accidents due to the slippery conditions on the roads. He referenced a wreck involving three 18-wheelers that occurred in Richmond Tuesday morning.

“[The truck drivers who wrecked] were trying to meet deadlines,” he said. “They had bad accidents... The answer is to stay at home.”

Whitmire also confirmed the information from an earlier report from KPRC 2 that the airports in Houston would be reopened Wednesday, with TSA lines being made available at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz reminded Houstonians of the dangers associated with carbon monoxide poisoning during cold weather events, referencing the two children in north Houston who were hospitalized after being exposed to the chemical in their home.

The mayor concluded the press conference by confirming that the number of incidents for first responders decreased today, which he attributed to Houstonians listening to his message and remaining indoors.
