‘They’re down the street’: Thieves remain on the loose after Houston man tracks down stolen items

HOUSTON – A Houston man decided to take matters into his own hands after his car was broken into just over a week ago, while having dinner on the city’s southwest side.

He says the thieves got away with about $2,600 worth of his property, including items that can’t be replaced like a collectable and school notes, but what he did next may be even more surprising.

The unfortunate situation happened back on January 4, in the evening around 9:44 P.M. inside a parking lot at 9393 Bellaire Blvd.

“Had dinner with some friends & then I walked back to my car afterwards and I see broken windows on my car,” said the victim, Aaron Kwok, adding that the situation left him in a state of disbelief. “I whip out my phone. I know that my AirPods are in my bag…so I track the location, they’re down the street from where everything happened.”

Kwok tracked the AirPods to the Shell gas station at 7171 Southwest Fwy where he found them tossed in bushes and discovered his debit card was used for nearly $60 for gas and two packs of cigarettes.

An employee stated he didn’t have a way to access the surveillance footage. Kwok hopes HPD gets it and investigates.

“I want to be able to go back to the places that I like to be at and kind of frequent without having to feel like my safety is compromised, the safety of my property,” he said

Investigators do not recommend you follow or try to track down someone who stole your property for safety reasons, instead they say compile all of the information you have and give that to them so they can investigate. Houston Police say they are working to find whoever broke into Kwok’s car.

Anyone with more information is asked to give HPD a call.
