The former coach of a track club in Kemah has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to charges related to a sexual relationship with a child.

Floyd Ira Thompson Jr., now 46, served as head coach of the Mainland Jaguars track club in Kemah. In 2021, he was arrested after being accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl he was coaching.

On Jan. 13, 2025, Thompson pleaded guilty to one count of indecency with a child—a charge that was reduced from one count of sexual assault of a child, a source confirmed to KPRC 2′s Robert Arnold.

Thompson’s original charge was presented before a jury in June of 2023, and they were unable to come up with a unanimous verdict. The Galveston Count District Attorney’s Office consulted with the same jury before entering Thompson’s new guilty plea.

Court documents alleged that the grooming began in 2016, when the victim joined Thompson’s track club with the hopes of improving her times and working her way up to an athletic scholarship.

Thompson—who was married at the time—began giving the teen special attention, separating her from the other trainees and even giving her rides in his car.

The documents also allege that Thompson encouraged the teen to tell him about the sexual acts she engaged in with her boyfriend at the time. He also encouraged her to wear tight-fitting workout attire.

After the girl and her boyfriend split in 2018, Thompson assaulted her on at least four separate occasions, all occurring before she turned 17.

Thompson was sentenced to 10 years of probation with 160 hours of community service. He was also required to register as a sex offender for the duration of his probation, plus an additional 10 years—so essentially, 20 years.

Thompson has also been ordered to pay for the victim’s mental health care.
