What happened?

Deputy Ursin was fatally shot on Aug. 28, 2022, while driving home after picking up dinner for his family.

The incident happened near 11902 Madera Run Parkway in Atascocita, where witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing a black sedan flee the scene. Ursin’s vehicle came to a stop after rolling into a tree.

He was transported to Kingwood Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses, including individuals at a nearby school track, observed two vehicles traveling side by side before hearing gunshots. Surveillance footage and witness statements later identified the suspect vehicle as a blue Kia Optima.

Authorities linked the blue Kia Optima to several individuals, including Wooten, who was seated in the back right passenger seat.

Witnesses and co-defendants confirmed that Wooten fired shots at Deputy Ursin’s vehicle during the incident. Statements suggest Wooten claimed to have seen Ursin pointing a gun, though no evidence corroborates this claim.

Forensic evidence, including fingerprints and DNA, further tied Wooten to the vehicle. Investigators pieced together the events leading up to the shooting, revealing that the suspects had spent the day together and were traveling to a friend’s house in Atascocita when the fatal encounter occurred.

After the shooting, Wooten fled Harris County and was tracked to several states, including Georgia, Florida, Minnesota, and Iowa, before returning to Texas. Authorities cited his frequent relocation as evidence of a high flight risk.

KPRC 2 has reached out for a photo of Douglas Wooten.
