Thousands of Houstonians gather to support breast cancer awareness in ‘Race for the Cure’ fundraiser

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the people of Houston showed out to support the cause.

Saturday morning, thousands of Houstonians walked and ran at the annual Susan G. Koma Race for the Cure fundraiser in Downtown Houston. The organization is committed to finding a cure for breast cancer.

Many have attended the race for years now. For others, like Luz Trevino, today was their first time.

Trevino was there in support of her sister.

“She found out this year, and she’s been working on it for three months, so we’re here to support her,” Trevino said.

Organizers said more over 7,000 people registered for the race, and even more showed up.

Olivia Morrison, who came with her cousins, said the race was also about those who couldn’t be in attendance.

“We really wanted to come out here to support the cause fight for those who can’t come out here… It’s really great,” Morrison said.

This year’s goal was to surpass $1 million in fundraising for the cause. Everyone who contributed to that goal has a different story, but they’re all united in a common goal: to find a cure for breast cancer.

“There a lot of love, a lot of love a lot of support a lot of courage like it’s really great to see the community come together,” Morrison added.
