HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with scholarships in 2024. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.
The eighth $2,500 scholarship winner from the Class of 2024 is America Lerma. Lerma is ranked third out of 421 students at Spring Independent School District’s Dekaney High School.
Lerma stays busy with extracurricular activities including JROTC, HOSA (Future Health Professionals), National Technical Honor Society and World Culture Club. She is the Vice President of her school’s chapter of the National Honor Society and is a cohort leader with the EMERGE Fellowship.
Lerma credits her mother, who raised Lerma and her brother as a single parent, for her academic success. “My determination to achieve what she couldn’t [completing her education] is not only for my personal growth but also as a symbol of honoring her sacrifice. As the first person in my family to attend college, I understand the profound significance of this milestone and it holds deep meaning for me.”
With an interest in Science, Lerma says her ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician.
