Suspect in stolen Jeep crashes into tree while being chased in NW Harris County; passenger dies

A suspect who authorities say stole a Jeep and led law enforcement on a chase has been arrested and charged with murder after a passenger in the vehicle died when it crashed into a tree.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said it happened at approximately 3:49 a.m. Saturday in the 20600 block of Hufsmith-Kohrville Road.

The sheriff’s office said Jaime Joel Rook-Perez stole a black 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was evading deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office. An unknown individual was also in the front passenger seat.

The sheriff’s office said Rook-Perez failed to drive in a single lane and struck a tree on the east side of the roadway.

The unknown individual was found with no signs of life at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Rook-Perez was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital Downtown via life flight.

The sheriff’s office said Rook-Perez is charged with felony murder, evading in a motor vehicle, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The case remains under investigation.
