2 teens injured in 2-story house fire in Montgomery County, firefighters say

HOUSTON – Two teens were taken to the hospital after a fast-moving house fire in Spring Friday morning.

Multiple fire departments in Montgomery County were called to the home on Emerson Creek Drive near Bakerswood.

The family tells KPRC 2′s Re’Chelle Turner that everything happened so fast.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Cynthia Burrows Pennell said.

She and her family watched as fire crews put out the flames at her home.

“I woke up and I saw a little fire that was a bit bigger than this book. I ran to the kitchen and at that point the smoke was black. I ran to the kitchen and got the biggest pot I could find, filled it with water and I poured it on the couch and that went out,” Pennell said.

Cynthia says she noticed more fire and smoke coming from upstairs. She was yelling for her daughter and her boyfriend to get out.

“She jumped from her bedroom window onto the roof and then my car,” Pennell said.

Battalion Chief Nathan Huffman with the South Montgomery Fire Department says they received calls from neighbors who said they could hear people screaming.

“Our first initial unit arrived on the scene a few moments later and saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure. They witnessed several young adults that were exiting the home with a report of an animal still lost inside,” Battalion Chief Nathan Huffman said.

Fire crews were able to give Pennell an album with pictures inside, but she doesn’t know what’s next for her family. Their home is a total loss.

“My daughter is going to the University of Texas in two weeks, and we had just filled up that whole bedroom for her to go to school at. It’s just everything. I don’t know,” Pennell said.

Firefighters said there were no reports of a smoke alarm.

Pennell says her 18-year-old daughter and her boyfriend were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Unfortunately, one of her dogs and a cat did not make it. The Red Cross is helping the family.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
