Answer: It’s unclear at this time and more study is needed, though there are those claiming its benefits.

New, but some very small studies, say the use of Xlear nasal spray could reduce the risk of becoming infected with COVID-19, according to Dr. Gustavo Ferrer, a pulmonary disease medical professional at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in Aventura, Florida, as quoted in Business Wire.

“Studies show that regular nasal cleansing may help reduce viral infections, including from the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19),” Ferrer said. “The concept is straight-forward: Cleansing the nose means less virus, less virus produces less risk of infection.”

In a petition addressed to the Centers for Disease Control, Xlear compares the use of nasal spray to handwashing, citing that both wash away pathogens.

On Dec. 8, 2020, Xlear submitted a Pre-Emergency Use Authorization request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“We hope to move forward quickly with FDA to address a gap in current hygiene strategies against SARS-CoV-2. People should be using Xlear as part of a layered defense to prevent getting COVID-19. If everyone used Xlear, in addition to taking other steps recommended by public health officials, we believe we could drive SARS-CoV-2 infection rates down nationwide,” CEO of Xlear Nate Jones said.
