Habitat for Humanity's SuperBUILD LI call for volunteers

HOUSTON – On Saturday, Townwood Park in Southwest Houston will be transformed into a construction zone. It's one of six locations, including one by KPRC2, where walls will come together at the hands of volunteers.

It's all a part of Superbuild LI by Habitat to Humanity. The goal is to build 51 Habitat for Humanity homes.

The drive began a year ago, when KPRC2 helped build home number one.

“Life, my life, our life has changed since we moved into the house,” Abdel Amraoui said.

It's been just over six months since Amaraoui and his family moved into their new house -- a house they wanted for so long but would not have gotten without Habitat for Humanity.

“My wife said, 'you know what, go ahead and do it, you have nothing to lose' and I applied. I took my turn, applied, stood in a long line and I was one of the lucky ones that got picked,” Amraoui said.

That's when KPRC2 stepped in to lend a hand.

Taking on its third annual build, station staff and Amraoui's family got to work. Finally, after hundreds of volunteer hours and some expert guidance, move-in day arrived.

“The moment you get those keys, it's a big moment, it was a big moment of our lives,”Amraoui said. “For the first three months it was a strange feeling but now it's, every part of the house belongs to us. Now it's home.”

To help them make it home Amraoui said, "I was able to pick out a sofa, table and chairs at Star Furniture." All those items have brought his family closer together.

“We are able to sit together and eat on that table,” Amraoui said.

There is one more item worth a mention.

“Bill [Balleza] gave me a table, which is very personal. I love it and my kid, my older son is using it doing homework,” Amraoui said.

If you'd like to be a part of Superbuild LI, then Saturday is your chance.

Volunteers are needed at five different locations around Houston for two-hour shifts to help construct all of the walls of the newest Habitat for Humanity homes.
