HOUSTON – Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner wins election to U.S. House in Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
Voters decided Turner will serve, following the death of Sheila Jackson Lee, who held the position from 1995 until her passing in July 2024 at the age of 74 due to pancreatic cancer.
Turner was mayor of Houston from 2016 until January 2024. Before that, he served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1989 to 2016.
Jackson Lee’s children endorsed Turner to succeed their mother.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee was renowned for her leadership in federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and for her role in making Juneteenth a national holiday.
A special election for the unexpired term was also held. Her daughter, Erica Lee Carter, announced her candidacy in the special election to complete her mother’s term. On the Republican ticket, there are two candidates: Maria Dunn and Kevin O. Dural.
In August, Turner emphasized his commitment to continuing Jackson Lee’s legacy of service and advocacy, while also providing stability during the transition.
Polls were open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
