SUGAR LAND, Texas – Investigators are still searching for suspects in the cyber-attack that targeted the Fort Bend County Library System last February.
“To me it is very unique, I have not had another investigation like this one,” said Charann Thompson of the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office.
OUR FIRST REPORT: Criminal investigation underway into ‘cybersecurity incident’ inside Fort Bend County Libraries
The attack involved ransomware that crippled all computers within the library system. It is important to note the library system is separate from the countywide system that runs Fort Bend County’s daily operations.
Jessica Tanner described the inability to use library computers as a “bummer” when the hack first emerged. Tanner relies on the library system to homeschool her children.
“I couldn’t ask to get books to be held for me because the computer wasn’t working,” she said.
Earlier this month, the entire library system was restored after the county paid $5.9 million for a new system. This cost was passed on to taxpayers, but little is known about who was responsible for the attack.
When asked if there were any suspects, Thompson told 2 Investigates, “Not that I’m aware of at this time.”
Thompson revealed investigators were able to “isolate and detect two impacted devices,” which were then sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
She added that analysis of those devices is ongoing, and “we are waiting on them to help us figure out who is behind this.”
