Hungry for a short trip? 4 flavorful restaurants to try in Baytown

‘Eat Like a Local’ airs Saturdays at 10 a.m. on KPRC 2

In this episode of “Eat Like a Local”, host Chris Shepherd takes an international food tour in an unlikely place! Chris heads to Baytown where he enlists the help of Mayor Charles Johnson to find the top spots to grab a bite.

Daniel’s Meat Market | 1402 N Market Loop, Baytown

The first stop is Daniel’s Meat Market where the house made REO sausage is a must. The chicken stuffed with boudin, a clever Creole-inspired mashup, also makes it to the top of Chris’ list. But it’s the in-house bakery’s oversized cinnamon roll and old-fashioned bread pudding dessert that leave Chris and Mayor Johnson speechless.

Asha’s Roti Shop | 1000 1/2 N Alexander Dr, Baytown

A short drive from Daniel’s, Chris finds Caribbean comfort food at Asha’s Roti Shop. The menu acts like a passport to Trinidad and Tobago with oxtail roti that’s slow-braised and richly spiced, hot doubles, and peanut punch - a surprising, sweet pick-me-up.

The shop’s busy walkup window show how immigrant-owned small businesses can build new communities around traditional recipes.

Cuban Cafe |4232 Decker Dr, Baytown

Next, the pair head to Cuban Cafe where authentic Cuban-pressed sandwiches pair salty ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese and pickles with buttery pressed bread. It’s the breakfast sandwich though that’s the best seller here — an all-day option with eggs, breakfast meats and cheese pressed on Cuban bread. Pair it with the dark roast Cuban coffee and it’s a meal that will keep you going all day.

Someburger | 1002 Decker Dr., Baytown

The episode ends where the Baytown intrigue first began for Chris at the long-running burger joint - Someburger. Chris discovered the neighborhood spot on a crabbing trip last season and was so hooked he had to come back to Baytown. At Someburger, the burgers stay true to the basics: a perfectly cooked patty, melted cheese and crisp vegetables. While Chris decides the burgers can stand alone, he recommends doubling down on the nostalgia with the stand’s thick, creamy malts.
