This episode of “Eat Like a Local” is all about craft breweries, and you can’t talk about craft beer in Houston without a stop at Saint Arnold Brewing Company.
It’s an icon of Houston’s craft beer scene for good reason. The brewery, which got its start in the 1990s, helped pave the way for other local breweries while also shaping how craft beer is sold and distributed in Texas.
Founder Brock Wagner explains how he learned to brew in his Rice University dorm room never expecting his hobby to expand into not only a full-scale brewing operation, but also a Houston destination with an outdoor beer garden and full-service restaurant.
Wagner takes show host Chris Shepherd on a tour of the Saint Arnold Brewing Company brewhouse and then heads next door to try out the menu of beer-friendly dishes. The Butcher pizza and pork shank top Chris’ list along with the Holy Smash burger and fries that pair perfectly with a Grand Prize lager. Watch this episode to learn the Texas history behind that beer!
Senate Avenue Brewing Company | 16000 Dillard Dr Ste F, Jersey Village
On a tip from What’s on Tap Radio host James Simpson, Chris heads out Highway 290 to Senate Avenue Brewing Company in Jersey Village. That’s where the city’s former mayor Andrew Mitcham is serving his community in a new way — one small batch pint at time.
Shepherd sits down with Simpson and Mitcham to explore the rotating menu of beers offered weekly. Mitcham details how he fell in love with the craft beer culture while traveling the U.S. in the military.
After settling in Jersey Village, he began homebrewing and was quickly caught up in trying to perfect the craft. In 2020, he opened Senate Avenue as a space for beer lovers and families to gather and socialize.
The day we were there, the taps featured a lineup of regular beers as well as experimental brews like Smoke Show Jalapeño Blonde and Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout served alongside pub-favorite dishes like the Big Fat Brat, El Superbeasto chili dog and a unique spent grain burger.
