In this episode of “Eat Like a Local”, a true Texas classic – chicken fried steak!
The history of this dish traces itself back to Austrian and German immigrants who brought their recipes for wiener schnitzel to Texas. They adapted it to Texas’ beef-centered food culture, and chicken fried steak was born. Legend holds that it became a campfire go-to for cowboys as they looked to make use of tough cuts of meat on cattle drives. With a history this strong, host Chris Shepherd just had to set out to find some of the best chicken fried steak in Texas.
His pursuit first takes him out I-10 to Sealy, where Wolf Pack Woodfired Tavern has teamed up with another local favorite, Bellville Meat Market, to create one of the most tender chicken fried steaks around. With a commitment to fresh, never frozen beef and a crispy crust that stays put, Chris declares this one of his favorites.
The menu at Wolf Pack has even more in store for Chris. He checks out the smoker where Texas Twinkies and BBQ Pork Ribs are begging to land on his plate, and the woodfired grill where they’re cooking up a must-try bone-in pork chop.
Then, there’s the crawfish, after all, Wolf Pack is run by the team behind BB’s Tex-Orleans. The crawfish are run through a boiling system Chris has never seen before.

Then, Chris heads to Sugar Land where he has a tip that Live Oak Grill is turning out a top chicken fried steak. While the mission is chicken fried steak, Chris is intrigued by the menu and adds a few more dishes to his order.
He’s impressed with the crispy pecan crusted chicken salad and the old-school burger. But, the chicken fried steak is the star of the show. Chris opts for both brown and cream gravy, a move which may have die-hard CFS fans shaking their heads, but this is his meal and both are winners.
Satisfied that Live Oak Grill has one of the best chicken fried steaks in Texas, Chris moves on to dessert – one that you may not realize originated in the South. Watch the video to learn more!
