Houstonians grab last-minute items before winter storm
HOUSTON โ People across the Houston area rushed to get last-minute food and supplies Saturday afternoon, as they prepare to hunker down ahead of the upcoming winter storm. Reyes said he kept his grocery list simple and just picked up what he needed for a few days. Some shoppers said the winter weather was worrisome because it not often we are forced to deal with it. โI come from a cold place so Itโs really not a big deal,โ Wooten said. AdโBring your pets inside, making sure your pipes are wrapped and making sure youโre taking care of the plants,โ said Arthur.
โConditions are so unprecedented.โ Gov. Abbott urges Texans to stay off roads amid winter storm
HOUSTON โ One day after declaring a state of emergency in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott sent a message to residents to avoid all travel as a historic winter storm approaches. โPeople think they will know how to drive on ice and there have been some people whoโve driven on ice before and snow before,โ said Abbott, during an emergency response press conference in Austin on Saturday afternoon. โBut these conditions are so unprecedented for so many reasons in the state of Texas, there will be so many other people who have never driven on ice before. And it could be one of the most hazardous things that you can do.โIf you get stranded, Abbott says to call the roadside assistance. Here is the full press conference:
Hurricane Laura evacuees staying in Houston hotels being transitioned to other cities across the state
Like many others that evacuated to Houston following Hurricane Laura, they checked into local hotels with the costs covered by the state through Friday. If families need help with transportation, the Red Cross can help them get there. The TDEM said displaced families that still need help need to call a hotline number so that everything can be processed. โWe do thank Houston. I do thank Texas.
