Gov. Greg Abbott is directing state regulators to conduct a comprehensive audit of data center projects seeking to connect to the Texas power grid, saying the review is necessary to protect the state’s electric reliability as demand continues to surge.

With the summer heatwave coming in hot (no pun intended), ERCOT is expecting peak demand for residents looking to cool off. Its dashboard forecasts to shatter last year's records and potentially threaten the all-time demand record.

As Texas prepares for potential cold weather this winter, experts are highlighting the state’s progress in renewable energy and identifying areas where challenges remain.

“These kinds of temperatures don’t lead to levels of demand that are particularly difficult to meet,” energy expert Doug Lewin explained

Naturally, with the growing power demand, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that ERCOT will reach another peak. According to ERCOT’s records, its grid has reached peak demand hours consecutively each year. In August 2023, the record peaked at 85,508 MW, surpassing its peak demand from July 2022, which was at 80,148 MW.

ERCOT’s weather watch does not indicate the state will see widespread outages or that ERCOT will call for energy conservation.

Bright and early Tuesday morning, the Public Utility Commission of Texas delivered a measure of good news concerning the Texas Power Grid.

Texans will not lose power if another winter storm strikes, like the one that crippled the state’s power grid last February, according to the chairman of Texas Public Utility Commission Peter Lake.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas, or P.U.C., held a meeting Wednesday with a number of items on their agenda pertaining to the failure of the Texas Power Grid. However, before the meeting kicked off, P.U.C. Commissioner Arthur C. D’Andrea stated the agency’s commitment to serving Texas. Agenda Item 16 stated they would discuss the investigation into the winter storm fiasco. However, no details of any investigation were revealed, although, officials did discuss the plausibility of an audit of energy used and prices paid by consumers.
