NABJ launches scholarship in honor of Houston trans journalist Monica Roberts
HOUSTON โ On Transgender Day of Visibility, a worldwide celebration of transgender and non-binary people, the National Association of Black Journalists announced a new scholarship named after transgender journalist and advocate Monica Roberts. The Monica Roberts LGBTQ+ Task Force Scholarship will support Black LGBTQ+ students studying journalism, mass communications, or otherwise interested in reporting and storytelling, the organization announced. The scholarship was created by the task forceโs co-chairs, Treโvell Anderson and Femi Redwood, and recently unanimously approved by the NABJ board of directors. โWhen our industry finally stops misgendering trans folks and hyper-focusing on our traumas, weโll be able to trace such a Promised Land to the efforts of Monica Roberts,โ said co-chair Anderson. AdโSince I joined Treโvell as co-chair of this Task Force, weโve wanted to honor Monica for her work,โ said co-chair Redwood.

The sixth $2,500 Senior Scholarship was awarded to Grant Ebel from Magnolia West High School in Magnolia ISD. Ebel has been accepted to the University of Texas, where he will be pursuing a degree in biology with hopes of becoming a physician in the future.

She has been able to maintain a 5.63 GPA and is ranked fifth in her class out of 848 students.

Nguyen has been accepted to the University of Houston, where he will be pursuing a degree in biology with hopes of becoming an ophthalmologist in the future.

Piedra has been accepted to the University of Texas-Austin, where she will be pursuing a degree in philosophy.

MISSOURI CITY, Texas โ A Missouri City native is one of 32 American students selected for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford in England. โItโs a bit overwhelming, but itโs really, really exciting. Since he is attending classes remotely, Thomas got to receive the good news at home in Missouri City with his family. Itโs really, really, really exciting. โOxford is obviously an incredible, incredible institution, and going there for free is even better.

On Wednesday, a $2,500 Senior Scholarship was awarded to Elizabeth Ogolo from Elsik High School. When I was going through my situations and circumstances, I really had wished there someone there to help me. I thought If I was able to see something happening to someone else, knowing that I wanted that help, I just wanted to offer myself to help somebody else. If you have something going on and you need help, there is always somebody out there willing to help you. Just like I was able to find somebody to help, there is somebody out there that can help you.

On Wednesday, the first Senior Scholarship was awarded to Alyssa Grover from Glenda Dawson High School. KPRC 2โฒs Christine Noรซl surprised the senior during her lecture. Alyssa also enjoys practicing piano, violin, and guitar, singing and performing with Ovation Theatre and EncoreChoirAlyssa enjoys volunteering at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and Camp Counselor literary-based summer camp.
