Firefighters on Santa’s nice list after rescuing child’s Christmas toy from drainage system

Hours after Santa delivered a shiny new remote-control car to a Houston-area family, the miniature motorized vehicle was nearly lost on its maiden voyage. The Willowfork Fire Department in Katy, Fort Bend County posted photos from the rescue Sunday afternoon on Facebook. The pictures show firefighters lowering a ladder into a drain and then a first responder crawling down to save the newly treasured toy.

Christmas Wonderland set for Sunday

The Hands and Feet Outreach Program and Broken Sprocket food truck park have joined forces to host a Christmas Wonderland event on Sunday, complete with a tree lighting ceremony, pony rides, pictures with Santa and more. Hands and Feet and the Christmas Wonderland are the brainchild of Jennifer Schuster, a retired teacher at Rivera Early College High School, who taught sociology and the community service program. “I just missed doing all of these community service projects,” Schuster said. The message resonated with us and she came up with the idea of the Christmas Wonderland.”Christmas Wonderland features all sorts of family activities, among them a gingerbread cookie contest, Christmas crafts, Christmas caroling, a toy giveaway, and food from the Broken Sprocket’s seven food trucks. People are pulling together to do this so these kids can have Christmas,” Schuster said.

USPS seeks help with ‘Operation Santa’ program

You can help fulfill a child’s holiday wishes by signing up for Operation Santa, a program by the United States Postal Service. The postal service is putting out a call for “kind-hearted,” generous people across the United States to sign up to adopt letters to Santa, the USPS said in a media release. According to the media release, USPS Operation Santa relies solely on random acts of kindness and the generosity of strangers. Beginning Nov. 28, verified adopters can visit USPSOperationSanta.com, read through the posted letters and choose one or more to fulfill. According to the USPS, hundreds of thousands of letters are written to Santa every year.

SPI announces attractions for McAllen Holiday Parade

The city of McAllen is highlighting its partnership with South Padre Island as part of the upcoming holiday celebrations. South Padre Island will continue its presence in the McAllen Holiday Parade this year with the return of its giant helium balloon as well as the debut of its own float, the city announced in a joint news conference with McAllen officials. Ridley the Sea Turtle, SPI’s featured balloon, will return to the McAllen parade this year in tribute to the island’s own tradition. “Like the McAllen parade, South Padre Island has a winter tradition also,” said Randy Smith, city manager of South Padre Island. The McAllen parade will also include the SPI Vuelta Zone, a zone along the parade route where the giant helium balloons are twirled as parade goers chant “Vuelta!”“This Dec. 3, we’re taking the McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B, to where it’s never been before when Santa returns to his winter home away from home,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez.

83-year-old Houston man returns home after long battle with COVID-19

HOUSTON – Christmas arrived early for one Houston family. The patriarch of their family returned home on Monday after battling COVID-19 for nearly five months. The 83-year-old spent 149 days in three different medical facilities battling COVID-19. He was moved to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Houston Medical Center for two months and spent the remaining time at Baywind Village Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. The hospital wouldn’t allow family visits whenever COVID-19 cases in the city were high.

Local clinic spreads holiday cheer with patients with drive-thru party

Santa, Mrs. Claus and all their helpers – decked out in masks — gathered outside Christus Health in Midtown to spread some holiday cheer to the young patients of San Jose Clinic. For 85 years, San Jose Clinic has hosted a Christmas party. This year’s party took place Saturday morning in a drive-thru style due to the pandemic. “Oh, it’s going to be very different this year but can’t disappoint the children at all,” said Mrs. Claus. Santa is helping to put food on the table this Christmas along with presents under the tree.

Holiday magic is arriving at CityPlace and Springwoods Village for families
