The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is holding an oversight hearing in Houston on Friday, focused on recent deadly incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including the fatal shooting of Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

More than 30 community organizations and labor groups will hold a press conference Friday to call for citywide participation in an emergency protest Sunday demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent on July 7 in east Houston.

While Lorenzo Salgado Araujo is being laid to rest Thursday, his family is pushing back against allegations stemming from a recent FBI search warrant, saying the “white crystal-like substance” found inside his work van was not methamphetamine but a “homemade electrolyte” mixture used to stay hydrated while working in the Texas heat.

A federal search warrant filed by the FBI alleges investigators found multiple bags containing a “white crystal-like substance” inside Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s work van after he was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Houston last week.

LULAC says three men detained by ICE after the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo are being pressured to sign self-deportation paperwork. The organization says the men are key witnesses and should remain in the U.S. while the investigation continues.

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare is urging anyone who witnessed Tuesday’s fatal ICE shooting in east Houston to come forward as his office continues a parallel review into the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

The son of a man fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent said Wednesday that he wants his father to be remembered as “a family man,” not simply as another immigration headline.
