This week’s athlete of the week goes to Ridge Point wide receiver, Dane Jones. The senior standout was one of the Panther’s top weapons. Jones helped lead Ridge Point on another playoff run.

A high school football star has died after suffering a brain injury during a game on Friday night, his school and family have confirmed.

“The district we’re in, it’s smoke!" a player said. "It’s like the SEC." 💨

For yet another season the North Shore Mustangs have punched their ticket to the state championship, and for yet another season the team standing in the way of their goal is Dallas’ own, Duncanville.

Here are some players to look out for during this week’s games. Names are listed in alphabetical order.

KPRC 2 Sports confirmed that John Kay is stepping down as head coach at North Shore and will begin his college coaching career at Rice University where he will be the new linebackers coach for the Owls program under Head Coach Mike Bloomgren.

In the first game of the season, Tomball High School faces Stratford High School in their own stadium. The game ended with the final score being 28-46. Here are some pictures from the game:

D’Eriq King starred at Manvel High School before playing collegiately at the University of Houston and the University of Miami. Now, he's training hard for the next level with hopes of hearing his name called during this week's NFL Draft.

High school football is back!

HOUSTON – Four years of high school sports and Wednesday marked the day many were able to put pen to paper and advance to the college ranks on National Signing Day across the country. Here in the greater Houston area, local schools and districts were able to spotlight their male and female student-athletes with signing events on campus. AdThe Houston Independent School District held a virtual signing day event with over 80 male and female athletes signing, representing various sports like football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf and cross country. HISD Athletes taking part in Wednesday’s event included:- Jacoby Boykins, Lamar High School, academic scholarship with “preferred walk-on” status University of Alabama football. - Ana Aguirre, Lamar High School, University of Virginia swimming- Gracelynn Alvarez, Heights High School, UT El Paso basketball- Anthony Brown, Sterling High School, Lamar University football- Walter Truitt, Bellaire High School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Track and Field- Bryant Hiskey, Lamar High School, University of Houston Golf

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Katy Tigers brought home a state trophy, while the Crosby Cougars brought their community together with a special 12-4 season ending in the state finals. The Longhorns cut the lead to 37-14 before Katy shut the door with a 25-yard touchdown run by sophomore Seth Davis, and an interception return touchdown by Cal Varner. Crosby falls short but makes community proudThe Crosby Cougars hadn’t made the state finals since 1960, but an impressive run through the playoffs got them there in 2020. Crosby won two games in overtime to reach AT&T Stadium but fell short to powerhouse Aledo in the final. Coach Jerry Prieto was proud of their effort and how the team’s playoff run brought what he called a “divided” community together.

Once again, Katy, which has looked like vintage Katy this year, made things miserable on both sides of the ball for Cedar Hill on the way to an emphatic 51-14 win - Katy's ninth state championship and the first since 2015. But once the dam broke on Cedar Hill's defense, Katy just poured it on. No matter what Cedar Hill tried to throw at Katy in the first half, nothing worked, and nearly everything worked for Katy on the way to a 24-0 halftime lead. The Tigers lead Cedar Hill 24-0 with :36 seconds left in the second quarter. Cedar Hill scored a few plays later but it was too little, too late.

“When we went into the playoffs, the whole town went,” said Wiggins, smiling. Now, Crosby is heading back to State for the first time since their 1960 run, and that brings back a lot of good memories. Now, Janik and Wiggins hope this group can finish what they started. “We’re excited to finish what somebody else wasn’t able to finish, and having the chance to do that is amazing,” Branch said. There’s no doubt the small town of Crosby will be supporting their boys, just like they did six decades ago.

HOUSTON – Five long years have passed since Katy High School has taken home the state championship trophy. Everybody’s ready to go.”The Davis brothers have taken center stage for the Tigers this season, as Jalen and Seth have led Katy to a score differential of more than 400. Of Hays’ 10 wins, four of them have come within seven points or less. Katy’s one loss was close (24-19 to Katy Tompkins), but all 11 wins have been by two touchdowns or more. “Katy is about winning state championships and that’s what we’re trying to do,” said safety Dalton Johnson.

Several Houston-area high school football teams, including North Shore, Ridge Point, Crosby, Fort Bend Marshall, Manvel, Katy and Clear Falls, will fit the field Friday and Saturday, looking to punch their ticket to the state’s semifinal round the following week. Marshall takes on Crosby at 1 p.m. Friday at Turner Stadium in Humble.

In the Houston-area, teams like Fort Bend Marshall, Crosby, Manvel, Clear Falls, Katy, North Shore and Ridge Point are the last teams standing. The Ridge Point Panthers began the year 0-2 with losses to Dickinson and C.E. “That’s where we turned the corner at the bye week,” said senior wide receiver John Paul Richardson, who will play at Oklahoma State next fall. HOUSTON – National Signing Day has arrived once again as high school football players across the country signed on with their college of choice. The system is now in place for a December date along with the first Wednesday in February that has become a smaller event than in years past. As more high school athletes now aim for early graduation, the December option gives them a chance to enroll in college in January for the spring semester and take part in spring football camps. HOUSTON – The Dobie High School football team is 9-0 during what has been a very strange season. “From last year, not even being able to have a spring ball and having to adjust to COVID.”The Dobie Longhorns haven’t been undefeated in the regular season since 1999, so this is historic. “Every day, every single day we come out here to work with the mindset to win,” said quarterback Cameron Gray. “To win everything we can, win every play, win every quarter.”What makes this football team special isn’t just the winning. Dobie takes on the Atascocita High School football team Friday.

HOUSTON – Thanksgiving week, The Woodlands College Park senior Dylon DeAngelo unexpectedly lost his best friend. “My dad was a very passionate man,” said Dylon of his father Tony. That Friday, The Woodlands College Park was set to play their rival, The Woodlands. It was a very high point for me and my dad.”Dylon’s teammates had loved his dad Tony, too. As Dylon scored, the energy and love could be felt in the stands and on the field.

HOUSTON – A Texas school district has made the decision to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after a player assaulted a referee Thursday night during a game. The incident occurred during a game between Edinburg High School and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Early College High School in Edinburg, Texas. Check out the video from the incident here:The Edinburg CISD released the following statement:“The district has decided to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after an unexpected incident involving a student that occurred during a football game on December 3, 2020. On behalf of the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees and administration, we apologize to the athletes, staff, and our school community. Unfortunately, this type of blind‑sided assault on an official while working on the field is not new to Texas Football.

HOUSTON – This past Friday, the Shadow Creek High School football team beat Strake Jesuit. “We were just making sure, if you go out, make sure you wear a mask, and limit the time if you are outside," said senior Jairo Castillo. Senior quarterback and Baylor commit Kyron Drones made sure the guys were staying in shape during those two weeks. “We’re just making sure they know football is the bigger picture right now,” Drones said. “I know people want to hang out and do stuff, but we can’t have that right now until the season is over with.”

For senior offensive lineman Jaeden Johnson, playing football after high school is his dream. “It’s been what I’ve wanted to do, what I’ve focused on, what I’ve worked at,” said Johnson. Jaeden’s voice is one to listen to on the football field, and off the field — when he’s performing country music live at 2920 Roadhouse in Hockley. “But not when he’s on the field.”“I can be gritty and nasty on the football field,” said Johnson. Meanwhile, his football career is still strong with several schools interested in having Johnson playing for them in college.

HOUSTON – An Alvin High School football coach resigned Thursday after players said he used the n-word and other racial slurs before a game. Just hours before last Friday night’s football game, two Alvin High School football players said a coach used derogatory terms they won’t soon forget. “I told him that wasn’t cool and then he told me, ‘Do I want to play?’ I just start walking away. A spokeswoman for the Alvin Independent School District said the school district has launched an investigation and a staff member has been placed on administrative leave, though the district did not name the employee. They work hard and they go to practice every day and for him to downgrade them like that it’s just horrible,” said April Bell, the players' mother.

HOUSTON – High school football in the Houston area is back. Coronavirus is forcing districts like Klein ISD to implement safety measures to protect both players and fans. “We are really thankful for Klein and the school district for making sure that everyone is safe. I personally am very thankful,” said football fan Stephanie Chase. Klein ISD will require all fans to wear masks and social distance and have set up hand sanitizing stations.

SAN ANTONIO – One of Texas’s all-time winningest head football coaches, Sonny Detmer, is dead at age 76. Somerset Head Football Coach Sonny Detmer went home to be with the Lord this afternoon. HOUSTON – Friday night football is back for some high schools. Jackson attended Friday’s game between at Stafford High School against Sealey High School to support his son who is in the band. “Football’s football, so still want to be able to enjoy that right?” said spectator Torie Humphreys. Torie and her husband, Luke Humphreys, attend the game to support a friend who is a coach. Even if the crowd size is limited, they said it’s important to have fans in the stands.

The Mayde Creek Rams pounded the ball on the ground in 2019 with great results, finishing 9-3 and winning a playoff game. The new coach, returning standoutThere are plenty of new faces, including at head coach and quarterback. Randle has been dealing with lowered numbers due to COVID, along with plenty of other related uncertainties. “Coach Randle has really brought up our spirits.”Loughridge will be the focal point of the offense, but now the team has a new element at the signal-caller position. “They put us as the #20 team in Houston and we believe we’re better than that,” said Jace.

At Needville High School, It was like Christmas Day for Needville head football coach Mike Giles. Needville, like several area schools, are trying to get ready for a season in the midst of a pandemic. "We thought we weren't gonna have our senior season. For now, the Fighting Blue Jays are preparing for a full seaosn, but know they have to be flexible. “We are going to continue to work towards our goals this season,” Giles said.

HOUSTON - It is not out of the ordinary for Carson Rodgers to be busy during the summer. The dual-sport athlete - who quarterbacks the St. Pius X offense on the gridiron and takes the bump for the baseball team during the spring - has always played multiple sports. "I've been playing baseball and football since I was a little kid," Rodgers said. Recently, Rodgers attended the UT-Permian Basin football camp and then the following weekend was back pitching.
