Woman says man exposed himself to her while she was walking in The Heights
THE HEIGHTS โ One Heights resident wants to warn others about her horrific encounter during her Sunday walk. Lauren Hammelman said a man followed her in a car and then exposed himself and yelled inappropriate things to her before taking off. Now, Hammelman is sounding the alarm and hoping that this man is caught. Hammelman was walking her dogs Sunday evening in the Heights, the neighborhood she has lived in for more than 10 years. โI screamed and ran away with all three dogs.โHammelman described the driver as a man in his 30s.
New welcome center in First Ward gives nod to Houstonโs local art scene
HOUSTON โ Houstonโs art scene is about to get bigger this year. Arts District Houston in Winter Street Studios will open their welcome center this Saturday at 1 p.m., bringing large-scale public art inside and out as a way to support local artists impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, a news release said. The new welcome center is roughly 230 square feet and will feature artwork from a local artist every month, and the grand opening will coincide with Sawyer Yardsโ Second Saturday event, where visitors have the chance to meet hundreds of local artists during open studio hours, socially-distanced. Arts District Houston will also serve as a directory for visitors with suggestions of places to do in the area, the release said. Business hours are from Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

โItโs heartbreakingโ: Doors at Heights Hospital locked because of nearly $1 million in back rent
HOUSTON โ Employees at The Heights Hospital said they couldnโt get into the building Monday when they showed up for work. โWe came to work and we were locked out,โ said clinical coordinator Barbie Ortega. One indicates more than $322,000 in back rent, and the other indicates more than $948,000 in back rent. She said patients still showed up so staffers took matters into their own hands, treating what they could in the parking lot. Mark Lee Thames, 49, now faces several new counts of indecent exposure and indecent assault. One said she was jogging near Stude Park around dusk when Thames began circling her. Both women were able to run away and called police who found Thames later that night and arrested him. Now HPD investigators have issued new warrants for Thames arrest in connection to incidents where he's accused of groping women in April.

The fire at St. Marks United Methodist Church started shortly before 1 p.m. A 2-alarm fire caused significant damage to a historic church in the Heights, north of downtown Houston. Houston Fire Deputy Chief Richard Galvan told News 88.7 firefighters were dispatched Friday at 12:45 p.m. to St. Marks United Methodist Church. Galvan said the fire damaged the second story of the south section of the church. Scott Stevens, a Heights resident who has been a St. Marks parishioner for more than ten years, told News 88.7 the church is an icon in the neighborhood.
