SAN ANTONIO – Animal care specialists from Sea World San Antonio rescued 13 endangered green turtles who were cold-stunned due to swimming in colder waters outside Corpus Christi, KSAT reported. Chuck Cureau, Sea World San Antonio’s marketing leader told KSAT the temperature at the Gulf of Mexico dipped colder than average, which would have put the turtles through hypothermia, limiting their ability to swim away from predators and boats. The team at Sea World San Antonio actively monitors air and water temperatures along the Texas coast which is determined when they aid in animal search and rescue, Cureau said. Once the turtles receive proper care at Amos Rehabilitation Keep, they were safely released to the coast, KSAT reported.

In September, natural gas began spewing from an unmanned platform off the coast of Corpus Christi. That platform is owned by Houston-based Magellan E&P Holdings Inc., which is not affiliated with Magellan Midstream Partners. In August, four people were killed when a dredging vessel owned by Orion Marine Group hit a submerged propane pipeline in the Port of Corpus Christi, causing an explosion.

(KRIS/NBC News) – A Texas teen is being hailed as a hero after pulling a crash victim from his car moments before the vehicle erupted into flames. Teddy Herrera was driving with his mother on State Highway 181 near the Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi when they saw the vehicle. Teddy got out, saw the man unconscious, and quickly pulled him from his car. The Corpus Christi Fire Department is working to determine if an award is warranted for the young hero. “His actions saved his fellow man in the face of danger, something that stands directly in line with our values at the Corpus Christi Fire Department,” said Fire Captain Jeff Durrwachter.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A 25-year-old man died Wednesday after he was hurt while surfing in South Texas, police said. The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. while the man was surfing in the Gulf of Mexico on the Corpus Christi beaches near Packery Channel, which separates Mustang Island from the northern end of Padre Island. Witnesses had to pull the man from the surf after he was critically injured falling from his surfboard, said Corpus Christi police Senior Officer Gena Peña. The man died later at a hospital, she said. Peña said the surf from Hurricane Laura, which was about 250 miles to the east, did not appear to be a factor.
