SAN ANTONIO – Animal care specialists from Sea World San Antonio rescued 13 endangered green turtles who were cold-stunned due to swimming in colder waters outside Corpus Christi, KSAT reported. Chuck Cureau, Sea World San Antonio’s marketing leader told KSAT the temperature at the Gulf of Mexico dipped colder than average, which would have put the turtles through hypothermia, limiting their ability to swim away from predators and boats. The team at Sea World San Antonio actively monitors air and water temperatures along the Texas coast which is determined when they aid in animal search and rescue, Cureau said. Once the turtles receive proper care at Amos Rehabilitation Keep, they were safely released to the coast, KSAT reported.

In September, natural gas began spewing from an unmanned platform off the coast of Corpus Christi. That platform is owned by Houston-based Magellan E&P Holdings Inc., which is not affiliated with Magellan Midstream Partners. In August, four people were killed when a dredging vessel owned by Orion Marine Group hit a submerged propane pipeline in the Port of Corpus Christi, causing an explosion.

(KRIS/NBC News) – A Texas teen is being hailed as a hero after pulling a crash victim from his car moments before the vehicle erupted into flames. Teddy Herrera was driving with his mother on State Highway 181 near the Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi when they saw the vehicle. Teddy got out, saw the man unconscious, and quickly pulled him from his car. The Corpus Christi Fire Department is working to determine if an award is warranted for the young hero. “His actions saved his fellow man in the face of danger, something that stands directly in line with our values at the Corpus Christi Fire Department,” said Fire Captain Jeff Durrwachter.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A 25-year-old man died Wednesday after he was hurt while surfing in South Texas, police said. The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. while the man was surfing in the Gulf of Mexico on the Corpus Christi beaches near Packery Channel, which separates Mustang Island from the northern end of Padre Island. Witnesses had to pull the man from the surf after he was critically injured falling from his surfboard, said Corpus Christi police Senior Officer Gena Peña. The man died later at a hospital, she said. Peña said the surf from Hurricane Laura, which was about 250 miles to the east, did not appear to be a factor.

After all, Hurricane Ike (2008) topped out at 110mph winds but had a storm surge that ran as high as 21! Okay, so what was the pressure of Hurricane Hanna? At one time, the Hurricane Center considered barometric pressure as a criteria for Category and a Cat 2 pressure measured between 965-979millibars. Hurricane Ike absolutely should have been classified a Cat 3 hurricane (because it was according to its pressure of 953mb and storm surge of 14-21).

Officials in South Texas had to tailor hurricane emergency response plans to life in a pandemic. Having enough face masks, sanitizers, gloves and other personal protective equipment is key to preparing for storms during the coronavirus pandemic, Mission Mayor Armando OCaa said. Emergency shelters have been tweaked to abide by health guidelines, and some of those shelters will wind up being hotels. The state emergency responders have provided face masks, sanitizers and temperature checks for evacuees at shelter sites in order to prevent transmission of the coronavirus, Christensen said. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas Gov. Greg Abbot visited Corpus Christi on Tuesday to survey the damage left by Hurricane Hanna, which made landfall over the weekend. During his visit, Abbot met with local officials and gave a news conference addressing the state’s response to the storm. “Just because a hurricane has swept through here, does not mean that it has swept out COVID-19,” Abbott said. “If you let down your guard, it will lead to an increase of COVID-19,” Abbott said.

The authorization from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Trump administration provides emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance and reimbursement mass care, including evacuation and shelter support at 75 percent federal funding. HOUSTON Officials in South Texas, which has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic in recent weeks, said theyre also prepared to handle any challenges from Tropical Storm Hanna, which was headed their way and expected to make landfall this weekend. Areas of South Texas could see anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of rain, with some parts possibly seeing up to 12 inches. We could be dealing with significant flash flooding across much of deep South Texas, Birchfield said. South Texas officials' plans for any possible rescues, shelters and monitoring of the storm will have the pandemic in mind. HOUSTON – Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales issued a plea Monday to tourists: Don’t come to Corpus Christi beaches and stay home. Canales, who spoke with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, called the request “almost unthinkable” amid “freefall (COVID-19) conditions” believed to be linked to the sheer numbers of tourists drawn to the Gulf Coast. “For the next few weeks… the coast is just not clear to come home to right now,” Canales told the newspaper. “Please do everything you can to help us stabilize. County medical examiner Dr. Adel Shaker has requested an extra morgue trailer, provided by FEMA to local authorities. A morgue trailer was in place at the beginning of the pandemic, but it was released early, Shaker said. In Houston, a spokeswoman at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences insisted that no extra capacity is needed at the county morgue right now.
