As students across Texas return to classrooms this month, a state lawmaker is pushing for a major change to when the school year can begin.
State Rep. Jared Patterson is preparing legislation that would move the start of the school year to after Labor Day, arguing that students and school staff should not have to return during the hottest part of the Texas summer.

The proposal comes as many Houston-area students head back to school in August. Houston ISD started its 2026-27 school year on Aug. 10, while many other major districts, including Cypress-Fairbanks, Conroe and Katy ISDs, began Aug. 12. Crosby ISD started even earlier, on Aug. 5, while Pearland ISD is among the later-starting districts, with classes beginning Aug. 19.
Under current Texas law, school districts generally cannot begin instruction before the fourth Monday in August. However, districts with certain calendar exemptions, including Districts of Innovation, can start earlier. HISD is among the districts taking advantage of that flexibility.
Patterson says a later start could help address concerns surrounding extreme summer heat, particularly for student athletes who practice outdoors. He has also raised concerns about the impact of early school starts on school budgets and the state’s electric grid.
The push has support from U.S. Rep. Craig Goldman, who has advocated for a traditional post-Labor Day start and an earlier end to the school year before Memorial Day.
However, changing the school calendar could also affect districts’ efforts to provide additional instructional time and combat summer learning loss. HISD, for example, has expanded its calendar to 180 instructional days.
For now, Texas students will continue following their individual district calendars, meaning first-day dates vary across the state.
In Harris County, the 2026-27 school year starts as early as Aug. 5 and as late as Aug. 19, with most districts beginning between Aug. 11 and Aug. 13.
The proposed legislation could reignite the long-running debate over whether Texas students should return to school in August or wait until after Labor Day.
