Moving this summer? Here’s how to avoid costly moving scams in Houston

According to the Federal Trade Commission, reports of moving fraud increased by 35% in 2025.

Summer is the busiest time of year for Americans to move, but consumer advocates say it’s also prime time for moving scams that can cost victims thousands of dollars.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, reports of moving fraud increased by 35% in 2025. Victims lost an average of nearly $2,800, while some reported losing tens of thousands of dollars after rogue movers refused to return their belongings until additional money was paid.

One of the most common schemes is a “bait-and-switch” scam.

Leah Napoliello with the Better Business Bureau says dishonest moving companies often provide an unusually low estimate over the phone without ever seeing the items being moved. Once the truck is loaded and it’s time to pay, customers are hit with unexpected fees that can double the original price.

“They will quote you a lower price, usually over the phone,” Napoliello said. “Then later on, the day of the move, all these extra fees are tacked on. Sometimes it’s double the price quoted, so it can be very shocking for the consumer.”

Consumer experts say movers have significant leverage once they have possession of your belongings, making it difficult for customers to recover their property without paying the inflated charges.

How to Protect Yourself

Experts recommend taking these steps before hiring a moving company:

Request an in-home estimate so the mover can accurately assess everything that needs to be transported.

Get a written contract that clearly outlines the total cost of the move before moving day.

Consider paying only a portion of the cost when your belongings are loaded, with the remaining balance due after everything has been delivered.

Verify the company is licensed through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles before hiring them.

Check the Better Business Bureau for complaints, ratings and customer reviews.

Look at reviews on social media platforms and ask friends or family members for recommendations before choosing a mover.

Consumer advocates say taking time to research a moving company before signing a contract can help prevent expensive surprises and ensure your belongings arrive safely at your new home.
