This Houston road ranks highest in pedestrian deaths in America between 2021 and 2023

HOUSTON – If you had to guess the most deadly road to cross in Houston road, what street would come to your mind?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Westheimer Road, a 3.5-mile stretch, ranked first for pedestrian deaths between 2021 and 2023, with 19 fatalities during that period.

The finding was part of The Washington Post’s investigation, “The Deadliest Roads in America,” which documented a recent surge in pedestrian deaths.

In 2024, we ranked the most dangerous intersections in Houston, using data released by Vision Zero Houston Crash Dashboard.

Westheimer Road was also named among the list of intersections.

Farm to Market Road 1960 was listed fourth for pedestrian deaths between 2021 and 2023. The 6.3-mile stretch recorded 11 fatalities during that period.

Traffic signals with crosswalks are often up to a mile apart, forcing pedestrians to choose between walking far out of their way or attempting a dash across busy traffic.

According to The Washington Post, road designs that encourage higher speeds have contributed to more on-scene deaths.
