SUGAR LAND, Texas – As increased patrols continue to take place in and around the Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, 2 Investigates obtained video of a stolen safe found on a levee off the golf course in late September.
Mick McRary and his dog Rosie discovered the safe while out on a walk and alerted Sugar Land PD, who came out and secured it.
“You can tell someone was trying to open it, it was pried up, but I don’t think it was opened, but you can tell that someone had been working trying to open it, but I don’t think they were successful,” said McRary before his sunset walk off Elkins Road on Saturday night.
Since the discovery of the safe, burglars have been busy raising the total of burglaries to nine, along with one robbery in July, according to the Sugar Land Police Department.
The department has also started using drone surveillance as a temporary eye in the sky with its strategically placed mobile stands.
“It makes me feel a little bit more secure knowing that they are out patrolling with drones,” said Frank, a resident near the First Colony Fields for over thirty years.
Residents say the increased patrolling of their neighborhoods, particularly surrounding their golf courses and bayous, has them a bit concerned.
“Very concerning, I mean, we live along the drainage, bayous here, and this apparently is one of their entry points, and so we are concerned about that,” said Don, who did not want to share his last name.
All the residents we spoke with said that they could not recall a string of burglaries impacting their neighborhood like this one has in recent months.
Sugar Land police recently held a community meeting, providing residents with a tip guide and asking them to contact them if they notice suspicious activity.
