North Shore High School’s football legacy: A powerhouse in Texas with five state titles and 30 playoff appearances

North Shore Senior High School’s football program never waivers in its tradition.

From the moment a player commits to wearing Mustang red, they understand the expectations of representing the program, community and Galena Park ISD.

Simply put, North Shore’s football program is a national powerhouse. The program has won five state titles and is approaching 30 playoff appearances. It is a staple in Texas and a household name across the country.

Over the past seven years, North Shore has compiled a remarkable 104-7 record under former Head Coach Jon Kay, who now serves as defensive coordinator at Rice, alongside current Head Coach Willie Gaston.

This season, the Mustangs are once again considered strong contenders to return to Arlington in December to compete for another 6A state championship.

KPRC 2 Sports visited North Shore this week to cover their practice as they count down to their season opener next Friday, Aug. 29, when they travel to Dallas to face fellow state power South Oak Cliff.
