It’s also the first time in years that the Theater District Open House is returning.

“This beloved tradition has a rich history of inviting people to explore our theaters and discover the arts experiences that resonate most with them,” Craig Haushildt, Executive Director of Houston Theater District tells me via email. “While planning this year’s event, I’ve heard countless stories from people who attended every year as children, cherishing it as a foundational part of their growth and creativity. Bringing the Open House back in the spring—when the weather is pleasant and families can enjoy spring break—offers a wonderful opportunity to reignite the joy and magic the arts bring to people of all ages!”

The event will be held from 12 - 5 p.m. and has something for everyone to enjoy. From interactive activities celebrating creativity; to life performances and hands-on craft stations, to an instrument petting zoo and onstage tours at Jones Hall.

“It’s an exciting time as efforts across the city are shining a spotlight on local artists and showcasing the incredible creativity that flourishes here,” Haushildt explained. “Guests can step onto a stage to snap a photo in the spotlight or even sing into the hall. Dance workshops will be led by local artists like YUNGCHRIS, members of the Houston Ballet, and a Houston-native cast member from Hamilton.

“Behind-the-scenes experiences will reveal the magic of stage combat, makeup, and costumes, showcasing how these elements shape storytelling,” he continued. “Live music will fill the district with performances by DACAMERA, the Houston Symphony, Ars Lyrica Houston, Mercury Chamber Orchestra, Apollo Chamber Players, and talented students from Kinder HSPVA and AFA. Theater lovers can enjoy performances by Alley Theatre, ALMAAHH, and Ensemble Theatre, while dance enthusiasts can catch showcases from Houston Ballet, Performing Arts Houston, Theatre Under the Stars, Houston Contemporary Dance Company, and Urban Souls Dance Company.

“For our youngest guests, Houston Grand Opera will present two beloved productions: Mo Willems’ Bite-Size Operas and Maria’s Magical Musical Adventure, based on a book by local composer Emma Wine,” Haushildt concluded. “And to top it all off, balloons, bubbles, and stilt walkers will bring extra energy and fun to the day, making it a truly unforgettable celebration of the arts! It’s the perfect way to celebrate the grand return of the Open House—a joyful, art-filled experience for all.”

If it all sounds overwhelming, don’t worry—the organizers have made it easy to plan the day with options to view the schedule by hour, venue, presenter, activity, AND discounted parking! Learn more by visiting their website.
