Houston – Halloween sneaks up fast. One minute you are carving pumpkins and the next you realize you still don’t have a costume. Today on Houston Life makeup artist Darcie Teasley stopped by with a solution that costs nothing and uses products most people already own.
“I am a mom. My kids have four things to do between trunk or treats, school events, and Halloween night,” Teasley said. “You run out of ideas, and you run out of costumes. The idea is to do something quick and easy using your makeup bag.”
Teasley proved that you can turn basic products like black eyeliner, eye shadow, lip liner and even red lipstick into a full Halloween look in just a few minutes. During the show, she demonstrated three looks: a comic book superhero, a skull, and a cheetah.
The key is to use what you already have. Black shadow, gold tones, a felt tip liner or even that red lipstick that has been sitting in the bottom of your purse will work.
Look 1: Comic Book Superhero
Products: Red lip liner, gold or silver shadow, black liquid liner, white liner or shadow
- Start by drawing a star or simple symbol in the center of the forehead using red lip liner.
- Tap gold shadow around the symbol to create a halo effect.
- Outline the star with black liquid liner for that bold comic book edge.
- Add black eyeliner accents around the eyes or cheeks to mimic graphic comic strip shading.
- If you want to go bigger, add a bright red lip.
“This is something you could literally do in the car,” Teasley joked. It does not need to be perfect. The fun is in the bold lines and graphic style.
Look 2: Half Skull
Products: Black eyeliner pencil and black, gray, or white eye shadow
- Use black shadow to shade the temples, forehead, and cheekbones.
- Follow your natural bone structure, placing shadow where you would normally apply contour.
- Use a sharpened black eyeliner pencil to extend a line from the corner of the mouth outward.
- Add small vertical lines across that mouth line to create the teeth.
- Add shading under the cheekbone and along the jawline to deepen the hollowed look.
Teasley said the key to the skull is not stressing. “If you mess up, just keep going. It is Halloween. It does not have to be perfect.”
Look 3: Cheetah
Products: Gold shimmer and brown shadow, black felt tip liner
- Tap gold shadow around the outer eye and on the cheeks with your finger.
- Using a felt tip liner, draw small C shapes and irregular oval spots over the gold shadow.
- Add a tiny black nose and lightly extend a line from the nose to the top lip.
- Finish with a bold or soft lip color so the spots stay the focus.
Teasley said parents can take advantage of leftover costume pieces. “A lot of kids have headbands or old costume pieces in a drawer. Pop those on and you are done.”
