HOUSTON – Open enrollment is here! Between now and December 7, people enrolled in Medicare have a chance to review their coverage and make sure their plan still fits their health needs and their budget.
Choosing a Medicare plan is one of the most important decisions you can make for your health — and your wallet. Each year, plans can change, so taking time to review your options could help you avoid unexpected costs or find new ways to save in 2026.
Review Your Plan
Lindsey Edwards-Olaiya with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement of Texas says the first step is to look at your current plan.
“Check if your coverage still meets your needs,” she advises. “If your health or budget has changed, doing nothing might lead to surprises next year.”
Look Beyond the Premium
When comparing plans, don’t focus only on the monthly premium. Deductibles, copays, and other out-of-pocket costs can add up quickly. Medicare Advantage plans are growing in popularity because they often include all-in-one coverage — with benefits like prescription drugs, dental, vision, and even hearing care — sometimes at low or no additional cost.
Keep Your Doctors and Medications in Mind
Before making a switch, confirm your preferred doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions are covered under the plan you’re considering. “Access to affordable, quality care is key,” Lindsey adds. “And make sure your regular medications are still covered next year.”
New Options to Explore
Whether you’re looking for standard Medicare Advantage coverage or a plan tailored to chronic conditions, UnitedHealthcare offers options designed for different budgets, needs, and lifestyles.
