The cards don’t lie: Tarot card reader reveals how HL co-hosts Derrick and Tessa operate!

Amber Ambrose says she uses the cards as a tool for reflection, healing, and empowerment instead of “predicting the future.”

Houston – Tarot cards may have a scary or spooky reputation, but for professional tarot reader Amber Ambrose, they’re not about predicting the future; they’re about helping people connect with themselves.

On Houston Life, Ambrose opened up about how her journey with tarot began more than a decade ago, right after she stepped away from organized religion. “I realized I was literally afraid to die every day,” she said. “Tarot gave me permission to explore, reflect, and heal instead of living in fear.”

Now, Ambrose is booked and busy all over the city, hosting events and even leading reflective nature walks. Her approach to the cards may surprise skeptics. “I see tarot as an empowering tool for awareness,” she explained. “It’s not about predicting who’s cheating or what’s next. It’s about understanding your own patterns and emotions.”

The cards, she said, act as mirrors reflecting what’s already inside of us. “They validate our experiences and help us feel witnessed,” Ambrose added.

After getting to know Ambrose, Houston Life put her to the test with a live reading for Houston Life co-hosts Derrick Shore and Tessa Barrera. Pulling the Tower and Page of Pentacles cards for Tessa, she described a year of transformation and self-expression. This is fitting as Tessa just turned 40.

For Derrick, the cards Ten of Wands and Justice carried a different message. Ambrose says Derrick carries a lot, but it’s a reminder to find balance and let others share the load. When you delegate, you’re giving others a chance to grow too.

Whether in a studio, at a local market, or over a cocktail, Ambrose’s readings often strike a chord. “Sometimes people cry at bars,” she laughed. “It can get deep fast. But that’s what I love those moments when people realize they’re not alone.”
