Las Perras Cafe welcomes everyone for coffee, connections and signature brews honoring female activists

HOUSTON – Las Perras Cafe in Houston’s Historic Second Ward is more than just a coffee shop. It’s a vibrant cultural hub where everyone is welcomed and recognized over a cup of coffee.

The spacious cafe immediately impresses visitors with its artistic decor and warm atmosphere, created by owner Andrea Arana with the help of her community.

Originally from El Paso, Texas, Arana grew up as a military kid, experiencing many cultures. With her father serving abroad, she attended high school in Japan and formed friendships with people from diverse backgrounds.

Her Chicano heritage on her mother’s side and passion for social causes inspired Arana to leave the corporate world and serve the Houston community with specialty coffee blends that reflect her brand of inclusivity.

Arana started with pop-ups, marketplaces and her own cold brew recipes, celebrating female changemakers such as civil rights leader Dolores Huerta and Alice Valdez, founder of Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA). She collaborated with local designers to create labels honoring each activist, adding a personal touch.

Her popularity in the community grew, leading her to serve many Latin musicians, including Mariah Carey, and develop a relationship with Live Nation Latino.

In April 2025, Arana opened a storefront on Harrisburg Boulevard between Sampson and York streets to better serve the city. But it was her strong connection with the community that made the storefront possible.

Arana gives back by collaborating with organizations on social, cultural and political events. She has made her shop a safe place where diverse voices are heard. Scroll to see the list of Hispanic Heritage Month events starting tomorrow evening.
