Is Your Roof Ready for Hurricane Season? Here Are the Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore 🌀

Houston – With hurricane season underway and extreme weather already impacting parts of Texas, now is the time to take a closer look at something you might be overlooking: your roof.

“It might look fine from the street,” says Carlos Elizondo Jr., owner of Sugar Roofing, “but there could be signs of damage most people don’t recognize until it’s too late.”

Carlos stopped by the Houston Life studio to share his top tips for identifying whether your roof is ready to handle a storm or is already in trouble.

Before the Storm: Subtle Signs Your Roof May Need Attention

Not all damage is dramatic. Carlos says there are several red flags that can show up before a major storm ever hits:

  • Ceiling stains: “Little dark or tan spots on your ceiling could mean moisture is getting in,” Carlos explains. “Outline the stain with a pencil and see if it grows.”
  • Shingle granules: If you see small, gritty pieces collecting in your gutters or driveway - especially after rain - that’s a sign your shingles are breaking down. “Those granules protect your roof from UV damage. When they go, the roof goes.”
  • Shiny or fibrous-looking shingles: “If you walk around your house and your roof looks shiny in spots, that’s a red flag,” Carlos warns. “It means the top layer is wearing off, and the roof could be nearing failure.”

After the Storm: What to Check Immediately

Just because your roof held up through the storm doesn’t mean it’s damage-free. According to Carlos, here’s what to look for:

  • Blown-off shingles: “If you see shingles in your yard, they might be yours - or your neighbor’s. Either way, it’s worth having us take a look.”
  • Sliding or missing shingles: Use binoculars or zoom in with your phone to spot obvious gaps or shifts.
  • New ceiling spots: Any fresh watermarks on your ceiling are reason enough to schedule an inspection.

Why Sugar Roofing Does Things Differently

Carlos knows roofing can be a stressful, high-stakes decision. “The average roof replacement costs around $20,000,” he says. “That’s why we do what we call a digital roof analysis—we go up there, shoot a video, and show you exactly what we see. No pressure, no surprises.”

Carlos’s team has deep roots in Houston. His father has worked as a general contractor in the area for over 20 years. Sugar Roofing originally launched as Sugar Land Premier Roofing, before rebranding to serve the broader Houston area and beyond.
