RECIPE: Celebrate International Sushi Day by making your favorite rolls at home

Houston – International Sushi Day is tomorrow. Have you ever wondered how to make sushi at home? We have you covered with KA Sushi owner Pak Tsui. He tells us sushi is not only for delivery or dine-in, but it can be made at home with simple ingredients and techniques.

With humor and wit, he shared some recipes with us.

Basic Salmon or Tuna Maki (roll)

INGREDIENTS:

1. Sushi-grade salmon or tuna

2. Most important part is to get high quality fish

3. Sushi Rice, prepared and seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar and salt

4. Nori, otherwise known as seaweed

5. Optional: Cucumber or avocado strips, soy sauce for dipping

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

1. Bamboo sushi rolling mat

2. Sharp knife

3. Cutting board

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place a sheet of nori shiny side down on the bamboo mat

2. Wet your hands and spread a thin, even layer of rice over ¾ of the nori (leave the top inch bare for sealing).

3. Lay thin slices of salmon or tuna horizontally across the center. Add optional cucumber or avocado.

4. Use the mat to roll the nori over the filling tightly. Press and shape the roll as you go.

5. Dab a bit of water along the bare edge of nori to seal the roll. Slice with a sharp wet knife into 6-8 pieces.

6. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi

SPICY TUNA ROLL

1. Sushi-grade tuna (about 4 oz, finely chopped)

2. 1 tbsp Japanese mayo (e.g. Kewpie)

3. 1-2 tsp sriracha (adjust to taste)

4. 1 cup sushi rice (prepared)

5. 1 sheet of nori

6. Optional: scallions, cucumber for crunch

SUPPLIES:

1. Bamboo Mat

2. Sharp knife

DIRECTIONS:

1. Combine chopped tuna with mayo and sriracha

2. Lay out your nori on the mat, spread out rice

3. Add filling of spicy tuna, add scallions or cucumber if using

4. Roll up tightly, seal with water, and slice with a wet knife

5. Garnish with sesame seeds or more sriracha

International Sushi Day was created in 2009, and is celebrated on June 18 as a day to enjoy and show appreciation to the traditional Japanese dish, it also highlights the significance and evolution into a global culinary event.
