Houston – Comedy legend Tommy Davidson is proof that talent doesn’t fade; it evolves and adapts.
More than 35 years after In Living Color burst onto TV screens and changed the sketch comedy game, Davidson continues to reinvent himself. From lending his voice to Oscar Proud in Disney Channel’s The Proud Family to music with Earth, Wind & Fire. During his more than three decades in the game, he’s made himself known as a full-blown entertainer. Davidson returned to Studio B ahead of his annual three-night run at the Houston Improv, just in time for Father’s Day weekend.
While he is very comfortable on stage, Davidson has been just as busy behind the scenes starring in a brand-new series with longtime friend Martin Lawrence. The two famously teamed up on the FOX series ‘Martin’ years ago, with Davidson’s unforgettable role as Varnell Hill. Now, they’re reuniting in a new but nostalgic show showcasing the journey of two comedy powerhouses who once struggled side by side just to get booked in clubs.
As a lifelong music lover, he’s officially made his way into the jazz world with Earth, Wind & Fire. The group that he says he used to wait until Christmas to get their records. Davidson is so comfortable on the Houston Life that he broke into a spot-on Obama impression, joked about tamales in Houston, and talked about raising seven kids.
During a round of rapid-fire questions, Houston Life co-host Tessa Barrera asked Davidson what the secret is to staying funny after 30 years. He responded with, “Just be scared not to.”
Catch Tommy Davidson live at the Houston Improv June 13–15, with multiple shows each night.
