This Pulitzer-winning drama about brotherhood and identity hits the Houston stage this Friday

HOUSTON – Get ready for an electrifying night at the theater! The 4th Wall Theatre Company presents the Pulitzer-Winning Drama and a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play ‘Topdog/Underdog’ starting this Friday, February 14!

This darkly comic tale follows brothers Lincoln and Booth — played by Timothy Eric and Brandon Morgan — navigating a turbulent relationship filled with rivalry and ambition. The older brother works as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator at an arcade, while Booth, an aspiring hustler, struggles to master the art of three-card Monte.

‘Topdog/Underdog’ originally premiered off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2001 before its Broadway debut at the Ambassador Theatre in 2002. This groundbreaking play made history when the playwright of the drama, Suzan-Lori Parks, became the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More than two decades later, its themes about family, race, and opportunity remain relevant today, resonating with audiences through its raw portrayal of systemic struggles and personal ambition.

The stars of ‘Topdog/Underdog’ stopped by ‘Houston Life’ to share insights into their roles and why this production is a must-see. Watch their interview in the video above.

“I hope people take away what life can look like on the other side. Theater exposes us to just like a slice of life. I hope when people come in, they get to taste that slice of pie and go home and change,” says Morgan.

This must-see production premieres February 14 — perfect for theatre lovers looking for Valentine’s Day ideas. Explore the complexities of ‘Topdog/Underdog’ at Spring Street Studios from February 14 through March 15. Tickets range from $35 to $65, with a special one-day ‘pay what you will’ night on March 10 requiring a minimum amount of $5.
