Harlem Globetrotters bring slam dunks and smiles to Houston

HOUSTON – The Harlem Globetrotters, known for their dazzling basketball skills and community outreach, are set to entertain fans in Houston on February 8. The team, which has been thrilling audiences for nearly a century, continues to inspire with their unique blend of athleticism and showmanship.

In a recent interview on Houston Live, Julian “Zeus” McClurkin, one of the most decorated Harlem Globetrotters, shared insights into his career and the team’s impact. McClurkin holds six Guinness World Records, including the record for most slam dunks in under a minute. “I did 16 slam dunks in one minute, and I had to run behind the free throw line in between every attempt,” he said, highlighting the physical demands of setting such records.

When asked about his favorite record, McClurkin expressed pride in his blindfolded slam dunks. “I could not see anything,” he explained, crediting his teammate for assisting him during the feat. The Globetrotters’ ability to entertain while performing such incredible stunts is a testament to their dedication and skill.

The Globetrotters’ legacy extends beyond the basketball court. McClurkin emphasized the importance of their community work, including visiting schools and children’s hospitals. “We have a program called ‘Smile Patrol’ where we go into the room and just try to put a smile on the kid’s faces,” he said, describing the fulfillment that comes from making a positive impact.

The team’s Emmy-winning show, “Harlem Globetrotters: Play It Forward,” showcases their community efforts and highlights other organizations doing similar work. “People never really forget the way that you make them feel,” McClurkin noted, underscoring the Globetrotters’ commitment to spreading joy.

As the Globetrotters prepare for their Houston performance, fans can expect a thrilling experience filled with high-flying slam dunks, half-court trick shots, and crowd participation. “We’ll even come up into the stands in the gym,” McClurkin teased, promising an interactive and unforgettable event.

Catch one of two games on February 8 at 2 or 7 pm. Tickets are available at harlemglobetrotters.com, where fans can purchase merchandise to support the team.
