Almost half of the U.S. are living with this silent threat to oral health

HOUSTON – A recent episode of “Houston Life” shed light on a crucial aspect of oral health that often goes unnoticed—periodontal disease. Dr. Michel Azer from the Texas Dental Implant Center, along with his patient Donald Toney, discussed the prevalence and impact of this condition, which affects nearly half of the U.S. population.

Dr. Azer explained that periodontal disease, often called the “silent disease,” affects the bone and gum surrounding the teeth. It can remain undetected for a long time, only becoming apparent when it reaches a painful stage. Symptoms include bleeding gums, loose teeth, bad breath, and discomfort while chewing. Dr. Azer emphasized the importance of regular dental check-ups every six months to catch early signs and prevent further damage.

Toney shared his personal experience with advanced periodontal disease, describing how it affected his ability to speak and eat and even caused him to lose teeth in his sleep. The infection from the disease can have broader health implications, impacting digestion, heart health, and diabetes management.

Dr. Azer provided Toney with a solution through a full-mouth implant reconstruction, a procedure that can be completed in one day. This approach minimizes the number of visits and surgical procedures, replacing infected teeth with healthy implants. The Texas Dental Implant Center is also implementing advanced treatment planning in 2025, using technology to design teeth based on a patient’s facial features for a more natural look.

Toney expressed his gratitude for the transformation, which not only improved his oral health but also boosted his confidence. He is now known as the “dancing patient” at the clinic, a testament to his newfound joy.

For those interested in improving their oral health, the Texas Dental Implant Center is offering a special promotion for “Houston Live” viewers.
