HOUSTON – Houston is going to the dogs! In a great way...
Dog enthusiasts worldwide will converge at the George R. Brown Convention Center for the highly anticipated American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) Nationals this Saturday, Dec 7. As Houstonians continue to embrace their love for dogs, this event showcases the agility and beauty of various breeds and aims to change the narrative surrounding bull breeds, which are often misrepresented in public perception.
Ahead of the event, Houston Life’s Melanie Camp caught up with Chris “Bully The Kid” Bennett, the chief spokesperson for ABKC and a champion dog handler, to gather some insights on selecting the perfect dog to fit any family’s lifestyle. Bennett emphasizes the importance of understanding a dog’s temperament and energy levels to find the best match. Learn more in the video above.
The ABKC’s mission is to preserve positive recognition of bull breeds, highlighting their qualities as affectionate companions and ultimate family pets. To inspire appreciation and understanding for these dogs, the organization strives to present them in a true light that counters negative stereotypes. Attending the Nationals is a family-friendly affair. Tickets are available at the door for just $20, and kids under 12 are free.

This year’s event highlights an impressive array of top dogs from around the globe, including champions hailing from Colombia, Argentina, Europe, and beyond. This year’s Nationals is also particularly special as it marks the 20th anniversary of the ABKC. To commemorate this milestone, exhibitors and handlers will wear their best Roaring Twenties attire, adding a touch of glamour and nostalgia to the event.
The event focuses on the competition and provides a behind-the-scenes look at what many call “the ultimate dog show experience.” Participants and spectators can celebrate the strong bond between humans and their canine companions. As the ABKC grows, the hope remains to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for bull breeds, ensuring they are recognized not just as show dogs but as loving family members.
Expect a day filled with excitement, camaraderie, and plenty of adorable dogs!
