Houston started 2026 on an unprecedented warm note, with several cities easily surpassing old January 2nd temperature records. Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) hit 84°, breaking the previous record of 81 set in 2000. Houston Hobby also set a new record, climbing to 84° and topping the old mark from 1965. College Station saw temperatures soar to 87 degrees, shattering its old record of 81. The only exception on the map was Galveston, where the previous high remained unbroken. These temperature spikes were well above the seasonal average of 63 degrees.
Your weekend forecast:
The good news for anyone looking for a break from the warmth: a cold front moves in Saturday morning and is expected to drop temperatures by nearly 10 degrees. Saturday’s high is near 76°, with an even cooler Sunday expected at around 68°. Morning temperatures are in the 50s and 40s.
No rain is expected with this front, but there will be a switch to dry, northerly winds for a noticeably cooler feel, especially in the mornings. These lower temperatures should stick around through Sunday, making it the coolest day of the upcoming week before a warming trend begins again Monday afternoon.

The Texans close out the regular season Sunday at NRG. If you are tailgating it will be chilly with clear skies and light winds. The playoffs are next!

After Sunday’s cool-down, temperatures climb again, and we could set more record highs on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain is possible Thursday through Saturday. Saturday’s rain would be tied to a cold front, and if that front moves through during the day Saturday, it will leave the Chevron Houston Marathon on Sunday dry and chilly, with early-morning temperatures in the upper 40s, perfect for running.
