HOUSTON – Doctors at UT Health School of Dentistry are hopeful an endowment will help them better understand a rare disorder affecting African American patients. The Katy mother of five is helping a group of oral surgeons at UTHealth better look at her DNA to figure out why her tongue enlarged back in 2017. AdA Florida man traveled to the Texas Medical Center last year for surgery after his tongue enlarged while being intubated in a hospital for COVID-19. “Second was long-term intubations.”Melville said of the five patients he has seen with the rare disorder, all of them were Black. Melville said he’s in the process of contacting former Macroglossia patients to have their blood drawn for the lab analysis.

HOUSTON – Memorial Hermann hospital has a special connection to polio survivors and wanted to ensure they were high on its list of patients to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The hospital first began treating polio survivors in the 1950′s and 1960′s, according to Dr. Gerard Francisco, chief medical officer at TIRR Memorial Hermann/ UTHealth. “Either because they got the polio before the vaccine was developed or when the vaccine was developed, they did not have access to it.”The TIRR post-polio clinic now treats polio survivors, like Rhonda Young of Kingwood. Giuseppe Colasurdo, president of UTHealth, opened the news conference asking people to have patience when it comes to getting the vaccine. That group includes those over 65 and people 16 and older dealing with certain health issues. Turner emphasized the importance of getting the vaccine and how impactful it is for leaders to set an example for the communities. Many people in communities of color, and other communities, are reluctant to get the vaccine, Turner said. Coleman said he wants people who have health issues to see him getting the vaccine and feel encouraged to get it.

“He’s getting the Cadillac of treatment at this point, very early and very aggressive,” said Dr. Luis Ostrosky, an infectious disease specialist at UTHealth. Ostrosky said the president is being treated with Remdesivir and an antibody cocktail made by Regeneron. He’s also getting Remdesivir, which is the antiviral that we know has some effect against the virus at this point," he said. Trump posted a video on Twitter Saturday from Walter Reed Medical Center addressing his health and the treatments he’s received. According to experts and doctors, the next 48 to 72 hours are crucial to the president’s recovery.
