HOUSTON, Texas – A Houston police officer sustained minor injuries in a crash that occurred in Houston’s Sunnyside neighborhood overnight. The crash occurred around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the 8200 block of Scott Street. The officer was traveling northbound on Scott Street in her patrol vehicle when a southbound driver failed to yield to the officer and attempted to make a turn, ultimately striking the patrol vehicle, according to an officer at the scene. The officer sustained a minor injury to her right leg in the impact and was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. The civilian driver complained of minor head, back and neck pain, according to an officer at the scene.

HOUSTON – Two apartment-based COVID-19 testing sites in Houston’s Sunnyside will be open to everyone Thursday, officials said. Congressman Al Green will be on-site to launch two free walk-up community testing sites located at Lansborough and Magnolia Place apartments. “It is our hope that senior citizens will get the testing they need,” Congressman Al Green said. “So what we have decided to do is bring the testing sites to the senior citizens.”Everyone is welcomed to come and get tested, regardless of symptoms or referrals. HOUSTON – A 16-year-old boy was killed Tuesday in what officials believe to be an accidental shooting near Houston’s Sunnyside neighborhood, according to police. The shooting was reported about noon in the 4700 block of Clover Street, near Cullen Boulevard. Houston police say the teen was playing basketball with other teens and young adults in the street outside a friend’s house. When the group went indoors to rest for a minute, witnesses told police that the teen slapped his pocket with his hand and a pistol he had in his pocket went off and killed him. It is unclear who owned the gun or why the teen was carrying it, officials said.

HOUSTON – A boy who went missing in the Sunnyside area Thursday morning has been found safe. According to Houston police, 9-year-old Romello Carter went missing about 10 a.m. from his home in the 8100 block of Bowen Street, which is near the intersection of Scott and Hondo streets. Romello was found safe about 5 p.m. Thursday and was reunited with his family, police said.

Along with family, friends, and neighbors, the fire department paraded by the home of Lionel and Grace Ann Russell in Sunnyside for a surprise celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary. “June 3, 1950, was perhaps the happiest day of my life when I married this woman,” said Lionel. “She was a prize.”They began their marriage with Lionel serving as an air mechanic in the Air Force. HOUSTON – Arthur Cash, 71, says he’s thankful to be alive after being shot just outside his home located in the 3000 block of Dacca Drive. “He was going back between the truck and he turned around and shot me,” Cash said. The gunman shot Cash in the hip and stole $1,900 in rent money and a few prescription pills“I think it’s wrong for them to go around shooting elderly people. He said this was the second time an elderly person had been targeted in the community in recent weeks. “It’s a shame that we have to live in an age where we have to live like this,” Cash said.

HOUSTON – The man who is accused of killing a Nassau Bay police officer Tuesday night was last seen Wednesday afternoon in Missouri City and is believed to be headed to Louisiana, officials said. Tavores Henderson, 21, was last seen Wednesday afternoon accompanied by a man identified only as “Anthony," officials said. Sunnyside SWAT sceneA Harris County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team found nothing Wednesday morning in the Sunnyside home where the home Henderson was believed to be hiding, officials said in a news conference. Henderson is wanted on a charge of felony murder in connection with the Tuesday night death of Nassau Bay police Sgt. Community activist Quanell X said Henderson’s family has contacted him and they are working to get Henderson to turn himself in to authorities.
