Lawmakers are hoping to boost Latino representation in the U.S. media by adding “Selena” to the National Film Registry, NBC News reported. The 1997 blockbuster movie starring Jennifer Lopez directed by Mexican-American filmmaker Gregory Nava has been nominated to be included in the registry by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, chaired by Texas U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro. “And this is one effort to make sure that Latinos are represented in the telling of American culture and the retelling of American culture, and part of that includes American films.”The film touched important cultural identity themes that depicted Mexican-American communities living between bilingualism and navigating personal connections between the two cultures, according to Castro’s letter. He felt there was a “renewed sense of urgency” to bring Latino representation in question after the El Paso shooting in 2019 that killed 23 people, NBC News reported. Castro told NBC News he will continue to push for more Latino representation in media and film to the U.S as congressman after his term as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus ends this weekend, hoping to tackle the invisibility of the community he represents.

Netflix announced “Selena The Series” will make its debut just in time for the holidays, which will be a coming-of-age adaptation of Selena Quintanilla’s life, whose life was cut short in 1995 when she was killed by the president of her fan club. A trailer dropped on Monday which shows Selena performing at a show singing one of her all-time hits “Como La Flor” with the tagline, “Every legend begins with a dream.”See the trailer below. According to the show’s official page on Netflix, “Selena The Series” is a story about a young Mexican-American Tejano singer whose parents make tough decisions to hold on to her love of music. The series is set to stream on Dec. 4.

The Quintanilla family is the exclusive owner of all rights of publicity. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times obtained a copy of the cease and desist letter, dated July 7, which states that the political event scheduled at the Selena statue “falsely implicates” that Quintanilla’s family endorses Trump. The planned Trump event also used the tagline “Bidi, Bidi, Trump, Trump” in a poster advertisement, which the family’s letter states “unlawfully engages in marketing, promotion, and exploitation” of Quintanilla merchandise. “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” was the title of Selena's 1994 cumbia hit. Though the cease and desist letter states Perez has two days to comply with the order, he said he looks forward to continuing with the Trump assembly at the Selena statue on Saturday.

The class, created by Sonya Alemn, will be called Selena: A Mexican American Identity and Experience and will examine how the life and career of Selena Quintanilla-la Reina de Tejano music-embodies the historical trajectory of the Mexican American identity and experience in Texas, according to the University of Texas at San Antonio class description. HOUSTON – Selena Quintanilla-Pérez will be remembered forever at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo after the rodeo announced they will induct the slain star in the Star Trail of Fame. Feb. 26 was the 25th anniversary of Selena’s last concert, which was at the rodeo. The planned induction is scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at NRG center’s second floor outside the rodeo offices, coinciding with RodeoHouston’s Go Tejano Day. Selena will be the ninth star honored with a plaque to commemorate her years of music at the rodeo, including her three performances inside Reliant Astrodome. Several RodeoHouston entertainers paid tribute to the Queen of Tejano such as Becky G, Kacey Musgraves and Camilla Cabello in the past year.
