NORTHEAST HOUSTON – Some brave neighbors jumped into action when they saw a house on fire in their neighborhood and rescued a family of seven. “I tried kicking the door down between them inside and me outside,” said neighbor Christian Cardenas. Almaguer, along with Cardenas, George Cardenas, and Ivan Madrigal, looked outside and saw smoke coming from a home across the street. The Good Samaritans helped the family escape through the front door. AdThe Red Cross is helping the family and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

HOUSTON – 25 green sea turtles were given a second chance to live and released back to the Gulf thanks to animal care professionals from the Houston Zoo. Partnering with Texas A&M University-Galveston and Texas Parks and Wildlife, the zoo facilitated the rescue after last week’s winter storm, according to a news release. Last week, as Texas experienced unprecedented freezing conditions from Winter Storm Uri, 37 green sea turtles were rescued along the Texas coast. Working with our partners @AggiesByTheSea, the Houston Zoo's veterinary staff oversaw the care & treatment of these wild sea turtles. pic.twitter.com/DqoYsJwLcm — Houston Zoo (@houstonzoo) February 24, 2021Eleven of the turtles rescued continue to receive veterinary care from Houston Zoo and are not ready for release at this time, the news release said.

While working over the Missippi River, a bridge inspector for the bridge-design company Stantec noticed a dog stranded beneath the deck, 120 feet above the river. According to Fox 10, Ryan Natalu, the lead climber and rescue technician at the scene quickly called the police for assistance and climbed down to save the dog. Natalu assessed the dog for injuries before assembling a makeshift harness out of rope and lifted the dog to safety. It is unknown how the dog ended up on the bridge deck. APT reported the dog was taken into care by local police.

LODI, Calif An elderly man was rescued by a police officer after she spotted him stuck on the railroad tracks as a train was barrelling towards him, NBC affiliate KRCA reported. Officer Erika Urrea of the Lodi Police Department south of Sacramento was in the area when she spotted the man in an electric wheelchair crossing the railroad tracks at around 8:44 a.m. Wednesday morning. She realized then that he was unable to fully cross and the wheels were caught between the metal tracks. As the arms of the railroad crossing were coming down, Urrea parked her car on the side of the road to quickly assist the man. Officer Urrea risked her own life to save another and her actions prevented a tragedy today, Lodi Police Department wrote on their Facebook page, We are extremely proud of Officer Erika Urrea and her heroism.

SURFSIDE BEACH, Texas – Johnny McGee, 67, of Pasadena is an avid surfer. On Saturday, during the height of Hurricane Hanna, he helped rescue two teen girls from the water at Surfside Beach in Brazoria County. That’s when he saw the two girls, ages 17 and 18, screaming for help in the water. Another surfer came out into the water and took one of the girls. “Surfers know through experience (if) you go underwater, (you should) relax relax relax.

HOUSTON A good Samaritan jumped into action to help rescue two women trapped in a car following a pair of crashes in northwest Houston. That's when the good Samaritan said he saw a white Jeep that appeared to be speeding slam right into the back of the black car. Authorities said crews arrived at the scene and it took them, as well as the good Samaritan, about five minutes to pull the women out of the car. Witnesses said the man inside the Jeep was spotted throwing something out of the vehicle after the crash. Investigators said officers later found a bottle of alcohol at the scene, which is believed to be from that driver.

A disabled dog is on the mend after he was found locked inside a crate off the side of a New Jersey highway. A middle-aged Chihuahua, who has since been named Stanley, was found on the side of Route 80 by animal control on April 29, said Megan Brinster, executive director of Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge. Stanley was with animal control for about a week before the animal refuge was able to take him in. When he was found, Stanley was locked inside a crate and was "frozen in fear," according to a post from the refuge's Facebook page. While he loves being close to people, he is also liking his own space and adapting to his new life.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting a parakeet, now’s your chance! These feathery friends are looking for homes after they were rescued from a bird breeder.

HOUSTON – The Houston Humane Society rescued 95 animals from a breeder in southeast Houston Tuesday after the woman surrendered the animals, according to a news release. According to the release, the woman’s husband died in March and she was no longer able to care for the animals. Because the woman surrendered the animals, she is no longer in violation of city ordinance, according to the release. All 95 animals were taken to the Houston Humane Society and will be up for adoption and rescue. Anyone interested can visit Houstonhumane.org or the Houston Human Society social media platforms for more information.
