More than 1,000 people gathered outside Houston City Hall today in a protest organized by nonpartisan advocacy group 5051 Houston.

The protest comes a week after NASA announced it would be shutting down three of its offices and layoff several staff members as the company prepares to reduce its workforce under the Trump administration.

PHILADELPHIA – Police shot and killed a 27-year-old Black man on a Philadelphia street after yelling at him to drop his knife, sparking violent protests that police said injured 30 officers and led to dozens of arrests. Officers were called to the Cobbs Creek neighborhood and encountered the man, later identified as Walter Wallace, who was holding a knife, Little said. Hundreds of people took to the streets to protest the shooting late Monday into early Tuesday, with interactions between protesters and police turning violent at times, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. One officer was hospitalized in stable condition with a broken leg and other injuries after she was struck by a pickup truck, police said, while the other injured officers were treated and released. The shooting occurred in a predominantly Black neighborhood in west Philadelphia.

Nigeria's president says 51 civilians have been killed in unrest following days of peaceful protests over police abuses, and he blames "hooliganism" for the violence while asserting that security forces have used "extreme restraint. The police order could further heighten tensions in Africa’s most populous country after its worst turmoil in years. Adamu, ordered colleagues to “dominate the public space” while announcing that enough is enough, a statement said. By not taking action against security forces, some Nigerians have warned, the president could inspire further abuses. HOUSTON Several dozens gathered at Emancipation Park for a Black Lives More Than Matter rally Saturday. The gathering was one of several across Houston, part a growing movement to demand change. We want to reimagine policing and reallocating things, such as having maybe a mental health team, said organizer Dav Lewis. Were just trying to raise awareness and show people how voting can enact change and affect change in their community, said organizer Carl Ward. That is our message: Its really not just vote but be an informed voter.Organizers said a march to city hall will take place in the coming days.

HOUSTON – The Harris County Appraisal Review Board (ARB) needs new members to preside over property tax protest hearings. Three board members serve at each hearing but there are 190 board members in any given year. Currently, they need 40 new board members. Board members are paid per diem. Members serve one or two years, as appointed by the state administrative judge.

HOUSTON A caravan from Houston is headed to the nations capitol to demand justice for Vanessa Guillen. Andrew Rodriguez and others who are part of the No Mas Movement started their 22-hour drive to D.C. early Wednesday morning. Rodriguez plans to peacefully march with thousands of people from the Capitol to the White House Thursday. Rodriguez said he wants the Guillen family to know that they arent alone and that they will keep pushing for justice. Houston is here for you guys, said Rodriguez, We wont let you do this by yourself.

Protesters gathered in Beverly Hills, Michigan Thursday to show their support for a teenage girl jailed after failing to complete her homework. A judge decided the teen, named Grace, violated her probation by not completing online schoolwork and sent her to juvenile detention. “I know if Grace was a 15-year-old White girl she would not be sitting in juvenile detention right now,” said Sheri Crawley. She said her heart sank when she heard Grace was in the juvenile justice system for fighting and stealing. Then she broke down when she heard Oakland County Family Court presiding judge Mary Ellen Brennan sent Grace to juvenile detention for violating her probation by not finishing her online school work.

As a part of a protest, anti-maskers are covering up by wearing non-protective masks to make a political statement. The protesters argument is that mask mandates are about compliance, not safety. To prove this, protesters are visiting stores that have a mask requirement while wearing a one made of a breathable material such as mesh. I wore a mask that is designed for protecting your face in a paintball battle. It was almost like not wearing a mask at all.

SEATTLE – A 27-year-old man drove a car onto a closed freeway in Seattle early Saturday and barreled through a panicked crowd of protesters, critically injuring two women, officials said. The car swerves around the other vehicles and slams into the two women, sending them flying into the air. Troopers arrived, and the driver was put in custody, Washington State Patrol Capt. He is listed in public records as a student who attended Washington State University between 2011 and 2017 majoring in business and commerce. The state patrol tweeted out two pictures of the driver’s car with significant damage to its bumper and windshield.

HOUSTON – Hundreds of people marched from Discovery Green to Houston’s city hall in honor of 20-year-old Vanessa Guillen. The Houston native, who was missing since April, is believed to have been bludgeoned to death on the Fort Hood army base in Kileen. Lupe Guillen, Vanessa’s sister, choked back tears as she addressed the large crowd. Other protesters, like Yvette Villegas, were at the event demanding those responsible for Guillen’s death be held accountable. “I don’t think any woman or anybody should have to go through this whether she’s in uniform or not,” Villegas said.

Starbucks is reversing its position that had prohibited employees from wearing paraphernalia, such as T-shirts or pins, supporting the "Black Lives Matter" movement. But on Friday, Starbucks reversed its stance, saying they can wear a “Black Lives Matter” T-shirt or pin until new branded shirts are delivered to 200,000 employees that include the phrase. In an earlier memo, Starbucks said it won't allow employees to wear "Black Lives Matter" material because "there are agitators who misconstrue the fundamental principals of the 'Black Lives Matter' movement -- and in certain circumstances, intentionally repurpose them to amplify divisiveness." Starbucks encourages employees to wear apparel celebrating LGBTQ rights for Pride Month: The company hands out those items to baristas. They noted that pride paraphernalia is allowed because it's company-sanctioned, and Starbucks hasn't handed out "Black Lives Matter" pins or T-shirts.

RICHMOND, Virginia A crowd of protesters in Richmond, Virginia, brought down the statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, CNN affiliate WRIC reported. But protesters vandalized a statue of Christopher Columbus, tore it down using ropes and threw it in the park. Ahead of the rally, the Richmond Indigenous Society tweeted "we are gathering at Byrd Park to protest yet another racist monument. Christopher Columbus was a murderer of Indigenous people, mainstreaming the genocidal culture against Indigenous people that we still see today. The state's governor has also announced plans to remove another statue honoring Confederate General Robert R. Lee from Richmond's historic Monument Avenue.

HOUSTON – On the day Houston-native George Floyd was laid to rest, Texas Southern University sought to honor his memory by granting his daughter, Gianna with a full scholarship to study at the university. “The Board (of Regents), in conjunction with the TSU Foundation Board, has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship to Floyd’s beloved daughter, Gianna,” the university announced in a press release. “TSU’s executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the University." Albert H. Myres, the chairman of the TSU Board of Regents said that Floyd’s legacy would be strengthened by the offer of an educational pathway for his daughter. “We know the value of an education in the pursuit of solutions and generational progress,” Smith said in the release.

HOUSTON – An emotional video montage was shown of George Floyd’s life during funeral service. Photos and videos showed Floyd with family and friends while he was alive. The montage also showed murals of Floyd, marches where thousands of protesters demonstrated their frustrations with police brutality against black people and the outrage surrounding Floyd’s death. Warning: One of the images in this montage features a person making an obscene gesture. Viewer discretion is advised.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – Deveonte Joseph stood out among the protesters in St. Paul, Minnesota, calling for justice after the death of George Floyd. Instead of a mask or protective gear, the 17-year-old wore his cap and gown -- which he hasn't gotten to wear because the Covid-19 pandemic delayed in-person graduations across the US. Joseph said he decided to wear his commencement garb on Thursday night because he wanted to do something "to put positivity in the world." At first, he and his friends were just taking pictures around the neighborhood, but they saw the smoke from the nearby protest and decided to join in. Brit Lee, the sister of one of Joseph's friends, was also taking pictures and said police officers and protesters were congratulating him.

His statue had stood in the city since 1895, but its presence in the multicultural city had become increasingly controversial. Many have celebrated the act, and video of the statue falling has gone viral in the UK. "But many people feel the Colston statue represented a sense of Bristol, so we as a city now need to have a conversation." The UK's Home Secretary, Priti Patel, was less amenable, telling Sky News it was "utterly disgraceful" that the statue was taken down. In the UK capital, largely peaceful protests turned heated in the evening on Sunday as activists and police clashed near Downing Street.

McALLEN, Texas A man who was seen in a viral twitter video brandishing a chainsaw and yelling racial slurs at protesters is now in custody by police, NBC News and the McAllen Monitor reported. The video of a man with a long-sleeved shirt and jeans carrying a large chainsaw quickly gained over a million views on Twitter. He wielded the chainsaw and yelled racial slurs and profanity at protesters outside a store, McAllen Monitor reported. The tirade continued as he walked towards protesters with the chainsaw as they fled, NBC News reported. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told McAllen Monitor that they were able to confirm the identity of the man in the Twitter video.

But in several cases, the country has also witnessed what appears to be excessive police force against protesters, reporters and bystanders. Video shows the officers breaking the windows of a vehicle and yanking a woman out of the car. In one 27-second video posted to Twitter, a New York Police Department vehicle plows through a crowd of protesters. And a third video shows an officer pushing a woman to the ground during protests. De Blasio has set up an independent review by the Corporation Counsel, the city's law department, and Department of Investigation commissioner.

One officer leans down to check on the injured man before another officer urges the colleague to keep walking. But dozens of Buffalo police officers who were angered over their fellow officers’ suspensions stepped down from the department’s crowd control unit Friday. “It was tremendous, tremendous to see,” John Evans, president of the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, told WIVB-TV.

WASHINGTON – Washington, D.C. is painting a message in giant, yellow letters down a busy DC street ahead of a planned protest this weekend: BLACK LIVES MATTER. The massive banner-like project spans two blocks of 16th Street, a central axis that leads southward straight to the White House. Each of the 16 bold, yellow letters spans the width of the two-lane street, creating an unmistakable visual easily spotted by aerial cameras and virtually anyone within a few blocks. The painters were contacted by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and began work early Friday morning, the mayor's office told CNN. Bowser has officially deemed the section of 16th Street bearing the mural "Black Lives Matter Plaza," complete with a new street sign.

The documentary tells the story of the days of protests, unrest and riots that followed. It’s a great film that shows how two different groups of people can react to fatal police shootings.

Color of Change is the largest online racial injustice organization. It’s a great place to donate to help fight racial injustices. If there is any organization that has been fighting for social justice and change for years and years, it’s the ACLU. Not only does it fight for racial justice, it fights for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights and so much more. This is pretty simple: The petition is asking for justice for George Floyd’s death.

The question: Why are loads of bricks being delivered around Texas? The city of Houston removed bricks and rocks left on roadsides, which may have been intended to be used during Tuesday’s protests to cause damage and destruction. HOUSTON – Several members of George Floyd’s family spoke in front of thousands of people about what the death of their loved one represents not only for them but for the nation. Floyd’s brother spoke about having love for the community and called for non-violent protests because that will shed a negative light on George Floyd’s name and the Black community. The march, organized by Bun B and Trae tha Truth, brought out around 60,000 people who peacefully marched through the streets of downtown from Discovery Green to City Hall in protest of George Floyd’s death. HOUSTON – The Houston Public Works is asking residents to report any suspicious activity after removing several piles of bricks and rocks in Houston. Officials said the bricks and rocks may have been intended to cause destruction during Tuesday’s demonstrations in the city. Houston Public Works asks residents to call 311 or the Houston Police Department non-emergency line at 713-884-3131 to report any suspicious activity or if you see someone leaving these items in the community. Officials will dispatch a crew to immediately remove the piles of items that may be used to threaten the safety and security of the citizens of Houston.

Running for Ahmaud Arbery had evolved to riding for him. More than 50 slab riders took to the Houston streets Saturday afternoon to ride for justice for Arbery’s death. Organizers said the ‘Slab Ride’ was to protest hate and violence against Black people. BELLAIRE – Emotional students and community leaders gathered at the steps of Houston Independent School District headquarters Friday night demanding action by the school board. This is after 19-year-old Cesar Cortes was shot and killed at Bellaire High School Tuesday. Students are asking the board for more transparency, not only in this case but other recent gun-related incidents on campus. The alleged shooter, a 16-year-old Bellaire High School student, has been charged with manslaughter. Students gathered at Bellaire High School Friday afternoon for a vigil to remember and honor Cortes.
