Community leaders and residents of North Shore are gathering Monday evening to address an alarming surge in youth gun violence that has claimed multiple lives and disrupted the local high school’s football program.

North Shore has been a perennial playoff team and that may even be an understatement, to be honest. The Mustangs have made the playoffs for 20 consecutive years, which is crazy. Last season, North Shore went 15-0-5 overall and returned four starters from last year's squad. Hamilton Estrada is another name to remember this year as he has interest already from the University of St. Thomas and Concordia. The Mustangs currently are 6-1-2 overall, 3-0 in district play, according to their MaxPreps, and ranked No.

But we got to the finish line back in mid-January with the Class 5A and 6A State Championships at AT&T Stadium. The lone state champ from Houston came in the form of the Katy Tigers, winning the Class 6A Division II State Championship over Cedar Hill. The Crosby Cougars were the other team to make it to the state title game for the first time in 60 years. So, who were the best of the best in H-Town in 2020? Jalen showed his leadership this season helping along his younger brother and sophomore QB Caleb Koger as well.

Yes, offenses steal the headlines but defenses win championships. It's a tried-and-true formula... see Katy and North Shore, who really rely on defense for winning big over the decades. This season, offenses lit up scoreboards like never before but these elite athletes slowed them down, tackling in space, pressuring the QBs, and picking off balls. For the Greater Houston area, the hopes of bringing home a state championship lies with Crosby, Katy and North Shore. The atmosphere at the game last week was awesome and the week before and even when we played at SFA. That year, Buda Hays reached the 5A Division I State Championship game where they fell to Grapevine. But then late, North Shore pulls away for the victory and punches their ticket to a third-straight state title game.

HOUSTON – When North Shore looks nearly flawless on gameday it's not by mistake. "These kids lift five days a week and they are constantly in the weight room," North Shore coach Jon Kay said. North Shore is in the State Semifinals for a third consecutive season – the last two winning the Class 6A Division I State Championship over Duncanville. The two have become the faces of North Shore football since they were freshmen. North Shore won that 21-14 in overtime inside NRG Stadium for what was then the program's second-ever state title.

HOUSTON - North Shore continues to check off the boxes. North Shore with the win improves to 14-0 overall and advances to its third-straight state semifinal game. This time around, the Falcons get defending Class 6A State Champion North Shore. North Shore pounced on undefeated Pearland Dawson on Thursday night, racing out to a 24-0 halftime lead and eventual 38-7 victory for the Mustangs. On Christmas Eve day, North Shore (12-0) will face Katy Tompkins (10-0) at Legacy Stadium with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. Last year they reached the State Quarterfinals, where they fell to North Shore in a wild 76-49 game. Westfield won the meeting 42-24 moving on to face the winner of Skyline and back-to-back state runner-up Duncanville next week.

North Shore has become a power in the City of Houston and the State of Texas. The Mustangs would be built up into the power they have become today. North Shore has won back-to-back state titles and three in the last five seasons. The Mustangs seek their third-straight title in 2020 and fifth overall as a program. This is the toughest district in the state of Texas. Back-to-back State Champion North Shore and perennial playoff powers Atascocita and Beaumont West Brook come together to form a mega-district. The West Brook Bruins are not far removed from playing for a state championship (2018) and return six starters and 28 lettermen off last year's area-round team. The Bruins return District 21-6A Newcomer of the Year Bryce Anderson (LSU), who played both ways last year but will solely play quarterback in 2020.
