Residents in Liberty County demand action on the stray dog crisis, calling for stricter laws and more resources.

It’s an issue that has been going on for months in Liberty County.

Now, two people who volunteer to help rescue and rehouse some of those strays, Jenny Rodriguez and Zully Vasquez, say the scope of the problem also includes people dumping unwanted dogs. Animals that may have been shot or run over and are now suffering on the streets.

Katrina Byrd is one of dozens of residents who alerted authorities on the stray dog attacks and was told she had the right to defend herself by shooting the dogs. When she did, she was put in handcuffs.

Residents across Liberty County are bringing their own solutions to county commissioners after ongoing issues with stray dogs and dog attacks.

As complaints continue to pile up, the issue of stray dogs and attacks is expected to take center stage at Tuesday’s Liberty County commissioner’s court meeting.
