LA PORTE, Texas – Gratitude went much farther than the line that stretched into Sens Road Tuesday outside of La Porte Independent School District’s Support Services Center. The parking lot hosted a food distribution site that offered 400 boxes of produce to area families, including Lorena Perez. The farms provide food for La Porte ISD year-round, through The Common Market Texas, an organization that pushes sustainable farming. “We’re going to be able to feed thousands of people by the end of the week,” said Margo Robertson, outreach coordinator at The Common Market Texas. Robertson said 1,000 boxes total were donated and they’ll be distributed throughout the area, helping area families as well as farms.

LA PORTE, Texas – A Houston federal grand jury has indicted DuPont and a former employee for knowingly violating requirements of federal safety regulations and negligently releasing an extremely hazardous substance in a deadly 2014 chemical release at a La Porte plant, federal officials announced Tuesday. The indictment alleges DuPont and Sandel knowingly failed to implement certain DuPont procedures federal regulations required. DuPont is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, and owns chemical manufacturing plants around the world, including the La Porte facility. A news release said Sandel ran the Insecticide Business Unit at the La Porte plant and was responsible for ensuring employees in the unit followed applicable federal safety regulations. If convicted of the federal safety regulations violations, Sandel faces up to five years in federal prison while the negligence charge could result in an additional one-year term.

LA PORTE, Texas – A shelter-in-place order that was issued for parts of La Porte because of a fire in Seabrook has been lifted. Emergency officials said the fire was burning at the Odfjell Terminal Houston facility on Port Road and the shelter-in-place was issued as a precaution. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said a pallet and hydraulic fluid were burning and that the fire was out. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said the county’s Pollution Control Department and the Fire Marshal’s Office were monitoring air quality in the area. In a statement, Odfjell officials said the air samples that have been collected meet acceptable air quality standards.

LA PORTE, Texas – The La Porte Independent School District is offering $1,000 to most employees under a resolution approved Tuesday night by the district’s board of trustees. The employees earned the incentive for going “above and beyond their duties and responsibilities” during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the board resolution. Trustees voted unanimously to extend a one-time incentive and retention payment to each employee of the district who was employed by Sept. 8, 2020. Substitutes, temporary workers and employees who are on paid or unpaid administrative leave do not qualify for the payment, according to the district. Employees who qualify will receive the payment by the time the district closes for the holidays on Dec. 18.

Both men say they paid Skelton hundreds of dollars for pre-employment screenings and then never heard from him again. Melissa Harpster, the secretary at First Baptist Church Highlands, said Skelton told her he was a soldier about to be deployed and needed some money. “He called up and said he was in the military and that he was helping the people in Louisiana from the hurricane,” Harpster explained. “Altogether, we gave him over $300.”Channel 2 Investigates other law enforcement agencies may be looking into Skelton’s recent activities.

HOUSTON – The La Porte Independent School District announced this week that all of its students will begin to receive free meals after the U.S. Department of Agriculture extended the Summer Food Service Program. The program will also provide free curbside meals for children 18 and younger who are not enrolled in the district. “This (waiver) essentially allows us to provide meals to all children without the added burden of determining who is eligible and who isn’t,” said Yvonne Bennett, La Porte ISD nutrition director. “If students are not present in the vehicle, the parent or guardian must present the student’s school ID number or badge to the cashier. The council started the meeting with a vote requiring everyone at the front table to cover their faces. Reached by phone on Tuesday night, Councilman Steve Gillett said he made the motion and raised concerns about his own health. Both sides said the other could take part in the meeting remotely, even in another room in La Porte City Hall. Garza said he plans to attend the next council meeting and will not be wearing a mask.
